What are common blocks about self promotion? |
In an increasingly competitive world, self-promotion is a must. There are thousands if not millions of people out there who don't put themselves forward. To fail to do so means you can get left behind or unnoticed, however brilliant or experienced you are.
I did an event this week for The Association of Women Solicitors about self-promotion. It was clear to me that this subject just isn't talked about when it needs to be.
Common blocks to self-promotion are:
- Time to do it when it doesn't feel like work, especially for working parents
- Beliefs about it e.g. self promotion is 'pushy' or 'arrogant'
- Self-confidence - 'am I really good enough'?
- Negative associations about it e.g. wannabe celebrities, used car salesmen, estate agents
- Lack of clarity of purpose - why am I doing it
- Sex differences - men are more comfortable than women
- Personality differences - shy introverted types can find it a challenge
- Undefined stakeholders
With all these blocks in the way, it is not surprising that many people avoid self-promotion and limit their own career success.
