Why bother with managed exits? |

Many employees are sitting in their jobs because they know they cannot get a better job elsewhere; because they know they are paid well or they are fearful of change.
Confronting this is often hard and avoided. But failure to tackle it results in blocked career paths, maintained underperformance and companies paying over the odds with salary deflation.
What can feel like a difficult conversation, if handled in the right way, is a relief to the employee who knows they are cruising. Once tackled a clear plan can be created with defined performance criteria, a reshaped role, for example without line management responsibility and sometimes a managed exit.

5 tips for tackling underperforming employees |

1) Support line managers to make career conversations with underperfoming employees a priority at least every month and ensure they keep detailed notes.
2) Arrange a meeting with line managers to look at the mix of their team and how it can be reshaped, with the departure of a team member a catalyst to rethink and improve resourcing.
3) Conduct an external assessment of the team's potential, propensity to leave and attitudes to change. Create an employee map to develop integrated targeted HR strategies, including rewards, L&D and managed exit strategies.
4) Develop a list of open questions to probe career motivations & fears and F.A.Qs. to equip line managers with the confidence to have performance career conversations.
5) Make time to have underperformance and job fit discussions with your own team - often HR look after others and neglect their own needs.
