Causes of career constipation
|
In the current market conditions, many employees are staying in their current job and employer and not moving. This is for security, for fear of losing legal rights in the advent of redundancy on changing companies, because of reduced recruitment or because they are grateful to have a job at all. Effectively this means that the usual flow in, through and out of many companies is blocked, with no room for new talent nor promotions that would motivate.
In the UK, average labour turnover is 14%, down from 16% in 2009 and there is a considerable decrease in the number of vacancies available. Source = CIPD.
With many people used to progressing via a career path or ladder, there simply isn't one. It is natural to learn new things, want more, a new challenge, so in this current situation of 'career constipation', creative thinking is needed to make the most of the current situation, rather than get wound up about it. Many bosses will be protecting their own position, holding onto rather than giving away responsibilities. The result? Much frustration and demotivatiion, with the loss of productivity that this brings that companies can ill-afford. Many employees in this stuck situation are adopting the 'fixed grin.' Are you one of them?
