All the trends I have read make me feel that the way many companies have traditionally done their workforce planning doesn't make sense any more. It isn't working for either companies or individuals and it needs to be rethought and renegotiated - a 'win win' more fluid contract that engenders loyalty and commitment but gives flexibility too. Individuals need to take more responsibility for their own pensions and training, but with security on both sides. Working mothers are expensive for companies to employ and companies do not give them the degree of flexibility they really need.
Paying a chunk of money to get someone into your company, paying a chunk of money to get them out, is not only costly, it is also inflexible to meet the fluid needs of businesses today. Contracts need to be rethought. Social media means that companies can attract who they want to them, and recruitment isn't always needed. Employees want flexible working and it does not make sense for companies to pay for full time resources they don't always need. Things need to change for companies to be fit for purpose and robust post downturn and it feels like the relationship is shifting from 'parent child' (employer, employee) to 'adult adult' - a more equal partnership. With the younger generations wanting a more diverse working life and retirement getting later, more flexibility needs to be in place to attract the best talent and manage the employee mix - the old ways simply don't work any more.

Five tips to rethink workforce planning |
|
1) Review how your company does workforce planning and are the right people involved in decision making?
2) Does the way jobs, teams and departments are historically structured still make sense to meet changing business needs?
3) If you were to start with a clean sheet of paper, how would you design workforce planning for efficient and cost effective resourcing?
4) Work out the cost of recruitment and redundancy and whether the balance sheet makes sense.
5) What is the right mix between loyalty and flexibility for an employer and employee 'win win'? Did you know .....Energise are the author of "A line manager's guide to managing talent?"
