What value do you bring? |
In a downturn, the spotlight is turned up on what contribution an individual person or role makes to the business and bottom line. Is that person or role a 'must have' or can the business do without? This is not a nice thought, but the reality of business and commerce especially at the moment, and better to be on the front foot than back foot. Forewarned is forearmed.
Thinking about and demonstrating what value you bring and what difference you make is vital as part of your self-promotion strategy. Spending time thinking about it could make the difference between being made redundant or not and whether you get a pay rise, or whether your services are used or cut as a self employed consultant.
Demonstrating the value you bring is easier for some roles than others, for example sales £££, % increase in market share, value of column inches achieved as a result of press coverage. The less quantifiable roles have a tougher task, especially as companies tend to cut things that are less quantifiable as it is easier, despite the cost to the business in the longer term.
For example, what price poor ineffective management and how do you measure it? The financial cost and lost time of an employee leaving and replacing them as a result of a poor line manager is huge, but hard to measure and quantify. The worth of a customer care person at a Bank call centre, building rapport and goodwill so that the customer tells other people how great the bank is and buys another product because they are so impressed, is amazing and important but hard to measure and prove.
Coaching can be hard to quantify compared with some professions - many of its benefits are about greater happiness, fulfilment and success, but its contribution can be quantified. Helping someone to focus more and procrastinate less has huge consequences, but how to quantify the value of time no longer lost! See the right hand column for some examples of the benefits coaching brings.

Five tips to demonstrate your value |

1) Find out what business measures link to your role. What measures are relevant to your contribution e.g. sales figures, customer satisfaction surveys, brand image, employee engagement surveys, cost reduction etc.
2) Reflect on what would be lost or wouldn't happen if you weren't at work - the opportunity cost - and therefore what benefits you bring.
3) Spend time on personal development and developing confidence and influencing skills. It is not always the best people who get the rewards, but those with confidence, conviction and good influencing skills who promote their achievements to the decision makers. Women often put others first rather than blow their own trumpet, so can receive less than they deserve as a result - if this is you, take responsibility for changing this or you will miss out.
4) Keep copies of positive feedback and achievements from customers, colleagues and relevant company reports to use to create a business case to justify why you deserve a pay rise or additional rewards, especially when budgets are tight.
5) What is unique and useful about your approach? This is your personal brand. Click on this link to read the Energise bulletin about this topic: Personal Branding
