Redundancy - problem or opportunity?
| |
I was made redundant in the last recession and what felt like the worst thing that had happened to me became the best. I hadn't been happy where I was working and it gave me a kick to do what I really wanted - move from marketing to brand strategy and consultancy - more 'me'.
The fall-out from the credit crunch has been huge. Redundancies have already happened on a mass scale and up to 900,000 more are predicted in the civil service. Being made redundant isn't nice. It can make you feel rejected, not good enough, scared and lacking in structure, financial security, belonging and with no career path anymore.
On the positive side, many people don't enjoy their jobs, but don't do anything about it and so redundancy forces them to create change. The lump sum they receive can fund a new venture like setting up a business, buying a franchise or funding re-training for that career that they always wanted to do but never got around to doing.
When you are employed, it feels like the employer takes responsibility, but when you are made redundant, it is on your shoulders, which can feel daunting especially in challenging job conditions and if you have never had to think about how to market yourself and who to. There is a shortage of full time jobs and the world of work has changed forever, but not many people realise this.
In a competitive jobs market, you need to work hard and be creative, be flexible and open minded, becoming skilled at marketing yourself, differentiate yourself with your personal brand, leverage your network for opportunities and target your communication to create success. We help people deal with redundancy and work out what next - see testimonials to the right to see what our clients say. We have created different products to help people with redundancy; group 'Steer your career' workshop, individual coaching and a NEW career change e course. More details below:

Five tips to deal with redundancy | |

1) Give yourself time to process the negative/difficult emotions about redundancy - it is a bereavement and healing the wound you feel and being ready to move on can take time. Be kind to yourself.
2) Be realistic in the current market - there are not enough full time jobs available for the number of people who want them, and may never be again. You may need to consider part time work, a portfolio career etc or turning a hobby into earning money. Paying for professional career support may feel unwise because your future earning is uncertain, but it will help you achieve success faster and see opportunities you simply cannot see yourself.
3) Redundancy is no longer a stigma, it is common, but do use your time productively and purposefully - update your skills, do voluntary work, read up on trends, become familiar with how social media such as Twitter can help you attract the work you want. Make positive use of the time you have on your hands.
4) Create a good support system; create a structure for your week with clear tasks and goals to accomplish, speak and meet people in the same situation as you, use online networking such as Ecademy and LinkedIn, finish those jobs around the house you never had time to do when you were working.
5) Remember those times when you were working to have time for you and fit everything in? Don't make the mistake of looking for work 12 hours a day. By spending time exercising, seeing friends and nurturing yourself, you will be more resourceful in creating your future work.

Self reflective question
Who do I know who has been made redundant or is about to be?
Inspiring quote
"When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us."
