Why create a biog? |
A biog. is abbreviation for 'biography' and is used as an alternative to a CV. It is useful the more experience you have and the more established you are, when you don't need to give the detail of your career etc. It is also a useful document if you are presenting any papers at conferences or events to give the audience a flavour of your background and experience.
A biog. is written in a narrative style rather than bullet points and should be no more than two pages long and ideally one. It is a synthesis of who you are, what you've done as well as some information about you as a person and what motivates you.
Use good quality paper, be succinct and don't repeat information. Spend some time reminding yourself of what you have done in your career as it is easy to forget and highlight the key things. Use a conversational narrative style, informal but not slang. The first section should be about your career heritage, the second about your notable achievements e.g. published articles or books and the third section about you as a person. Make sure that your USP i.e. what differentiates you from other people in your sector comes across. |
Five tips for a better biog |

1) Use the third person, i.e. "John Smith has 18 years specialising in..." not first person i.e. "I have 18 years experience specialising in...." 2) Show your draft biog to someone you know and trust and get them to read it and give you feedback 3) Blow your own trumpet but not to the extent of coming across as arrogant 4) Focus on the most important things e.g. the achievements that really stand out and the skills you have that are niche or really strong 5) Remember to include your contact details in the footer as your biog. may be forwarded on to other potential prospects
