What is courage?

Man on type rope above city stress

We live in times where courage is needed. Courage to change careers, courage to deal with redundancy, courage to embrace an uncertain future, courage to stand up for what we believe in, courage to deal with a changing world of work, courage to cope with shrinking pensions. What is courage?

Courage is a quality of mind or spirit. It enables a person to have the courage of their convictions and to act in accordance with their beliefs, in spite of criticism. Courage takes enterprise, determination, endurance, audacity, fortitude, backbone, the ability to confront fear, pain, risk and uncertainty. To be who you are and to go your own way takes courage. It is easier to be a 'sheep', to follow others, please others, to stick your head in the sand. To truly be yourself and do what you want to do and be who you want to be is freedom.

To be courageous takes courage. Some people do it naturally or as part of their job, for example the forces and the police. Changing your career takes courage, after all it is much easier to do what you have always done, to mow that same path, even though you know it isn't the path that's really you. To follow a career that you really want to do for example takes courage. It risks upsetting your parents, distancing yourself from your friends or peers.  Being courageous may involve short-term sacrifices and discomfort, but the gains in the longer term and how you feel about yourself are immeasurable. Making hard decisions now to ensure the survival of a business in the longer term takes courage, so does telling a client that you no longer want to work with them because how they behave or treat you is unacceptable.

Who comes into your mind when you think about courage? It might be someone dealing with an illness or hardship with fortitude and grace. You may not see yourself as courageous, but I bet you are. Think of times in your life when you have dealt with adversity and what enabled you to cope. People are amazingly resourceful, but they don't always give themselves credit for this.

Career change takes courage, especially in a recession. Challenging times make people look at what is really important and to enjoy your work is really important.   Download our Energise "Pain free career change"  free report and tell others about it too.

Five tips to find courage
Male lion

1) Know yourself well - your values, beliefs, what makes you happy, your fears

2) Define your life purpose - what are you here for? Is your work enabling you to do this?

3) Find role models to inspire you - alive or dead. Gandhi is one of mine.

4) Ask yourself "what is the worst that could happen if I made the change I know to be right?

5) Imagine going to the end of your life and looking back at where you are now - what advice would you give yourself?

If you face some big decisions, have you thought about getting support and having an objective sounding board? Coaching gives you support, time to think and much more.

"Most people would rather be certain they are miserable, than risk being happy." Dr Robert Anthony

Testimonials

"Coaching has allowed me to focus on the career I want. I now recognise that many of the limiting beliefs that I held were as a result of trying to please other people. It has enabled me to see with more clarity what I want from a job and the type of organisation I want to work for."

Sarah Greaves, The Arts

"My coaching sessions with Rachel were like going to the spa!"

Sandy Mahal, The Reading Agency

"It focused me and with your sharing of so much knowledge as well as tips and hints gave me a huge amount of support and a gentle kick to go and be great at what I really want to do. Thanks!"

Pat Farr

"My life before coaching was like MDF, now it's like oak."

"Coaching gave me a new found confidence. Rachel constantly looks for, and thinks of, ways to help and seems to have a solution to every problem and a tool to be used again and again. She's great fun and incredibly inspiring and motivating - don't just dream your dreams - she shows you how to put a plan in place of how you're going to achieve them!"
