What causes disengagement? |

Is disengagement a problem in your organisation? Right now there's a lot of tired, overworked, underpaid employees out there, and that includes the people responsible for employee engagement.
At its simplest, engagement is feeling 'switched on' and connected to task, role and company. Disengagement or feeling 'switched off' can have a number of causes including; a dented psychological contract - perceived unfairness of reward and recognition vs. effort; personal values not being honoured at work; a job that doesn't play to an individual's strengths and motivations so it feels like a grind; blocked progression; employees not seeing a link between their role and the company's vision; corporate incongruence, i.e. a disconnect between what is said and what is done; tiredness, stress and overwhelm; not seeing things getting any better and being paralysed by uncertainty and change.
In some cases for companies with too low a churn of employees, disengagement is not a problem but an opportunity as it may mean that them leaving is desirable and fresh talent can be brought on board. In either case, a crafty strategy is needed to address the problem.
With a 'double dip' recession being talked about, paying employees for reduced effort is something organisations can ill-afford. So how can you re-engage a dispirited workforce? It is easy to put off thinking about it, after all haven't you got enough on your plate? But failure to address disengagement is like leaving a rotten apple in a bowl of fruit, it spreads, with dire consequences to the healthy produce. Energise offers a range of services to help you successfully overcome human capital challenges like these.

Five tips to re-engage the disengaged |
|
1) Create an image and word audit expressing current causes of disengagement and prioritise the factors
2) Set up a specific room at work decorated with the organisation's challenges and objectives, where employees can go to think about and contribute positive ideas as 'graffiti' - feeling that they have a voice
3) Run a session with The Board to identify what engages and disengages them to put employee engagement higher up the agenda
4) Use data to highlight the cost of ignoring this issue
5) Do an action learning set to tackle this subject with a core team of engagement ambassadors
