Is self employment your 'cup of tea?'
| |
A lot of people think employment is more secure than self employment, but the downturn has shown us that this is no longer the case. I have been self employed for nearly fourteen years and wouldn't have it any other way. I am naturally honest, direct and objective, and these qualities provide benefits to companies with fresh insightful and incisive thinking, and for me self employment suits my values of freedom, choice and space. It can be stressful too, but for me, the pros outweigh the cons. How about you?
Self employment isn't for everyone, but there's various different types that suit varying degrees of financial security and preference; associate work; contracts/interim; freelance; franchises & licensing and marketing yourself to get your own work. It's important to know yourself and choose the type that suits you best, so that self employment is enjoyable and works for you.
The 'job for life' no longer exists and I have seen more and more people want to get off the 'corporate escalator', have better work life balance and more meaning and purpose through their work. The younger generations - called 'Generation Y' and the 'Millennials' present a challenge to engage and retain for employers. A blend of employment and self employment will become the norm in the future, and so companies need to address their barriers to flexible/part time working, or they will lose the people they want to keep. One of my frustrations with companies is that they ignore this very real issue, avoiding or not making time for 'career conversations'. At the moment employers hold the power, as employees are staying safe in their jobs, but the tide will turn.

Five tips to ensure self employment works for you | |

1) Follow your heart AND your head when considering self employment as an option - benchmark your options vs. your current and previous work
2) Put systems in place from the outset to help you work smart; create templates; automate; delegate; get a mentor/coach and virtual PA
3) Before you launch, evaluate the options very carefully and start as you mean to go on; ensure you work ON the business as well as IN the business; block out time regularly to think, review and plan and make sure you keep a close eye on trends - they are changing fast!
4) Create and build a distinctive brand that makes you proud and be relevant, impactful and consistent always with your target audiences
5) Marketing is a big block for many in self employment, and the cause of many small businesses to fail. Don't be one of them. Social media e.g. Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, has opened the door of opportunity for entrepreneurs with enterprise to market from their armchairs at little or no cost
If you are happy in your career but know someone who is thinking about self employment in future, why not forward this bulletin to them?

What do you see as the pros and cons of self employment for you?

Energise Testimonials
"Rachel helped me to decide what would really make me happy in the second half of my career, confront the fears and put a plan in place to make it happen. One year in the making, centred around my passionate interest in cheese, I credit Energise for kick starting the realisation."
Debbi Baron
"Rachel helped me to stay on track, championing the successes and helping me to believe that my vision was possible, plus identifying ways around the inevitable obstacles that have been in my path."
Duncan Goose
"Working with Rachel at Energise not only helped me discover my true calling for a complete career change, but also taught me much more about myself than I had anticipated. Rachel's practical exercises, questions and steps prepared me for eventually taking the leap. Rachel's approach was what I was looking for in a business coach: helping me identify what I wanted, creating the blueprint to do it, and then holding me accountable for taking action. But the best part was that I learned tools and skills that I still use daily in many aspects of my life, not just my career."
Cory Cook
"Working with Energise has been a very satisfying and enlightening exercise. By allowing me to recognise what I found rewarding in both my previous career and my personal life, overlaying the work-family balance I was striving for, I was given a sense of focus and clear indications of what is possible for my final career."

How Energise help & client successes
Our job is to liberate talent and this includes helping some of our clients to become self employed. We'll be sharing many examples of this in our new career change e course - we act as a catalyst for our clients' career changes and are a great connector to people, ideas and resources.
Common blocks to becoming self employed are lack of confidence and self belief, fear of uncertainty, failure and rejection, dislike of self promotion, not being focused enough and poor self management. With nearly fourteen years experience, we are an old hand and share everything we know to help our clients to overcome these hurdles, be successful and design self employment to suit them, maximising the positives and minimising the negatives.
Here are three examples of clients we have helped to successfully move from employment to self employment.
From architecture & design to holidays in France around cheese - Debbi Baron
From advertising to setting up a charity - Duncan Goose
