How can writing articles help build your brand?

woman writing at coffee tableI love writing and articles enable me to help more people than I can do through my coaching work. Once written, they can be recycled for different uses, and it is enjoyable to both help people and attract clients years after putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. Articles can help you gain credibility and thought leadership in new areas and build your brand, cost effectively. As a small business it can be hard to keep up the awareness that you exist for when people have a need, so writing helps.

Since I started Energise 13 years ago, the Web has grown in its role for articles and means that articles give lifelong promotion from your one off investment of time at no cost. Links back to your web site when placed on the web, have no shelf life, and help prospects find you in the future. Articles I have written, whether career change, dealing with life or talent engagement add more value to my clients, and seeing your article in print in a magazine gives a great buzz.

Writing articles isn't everyone's cup of tea, but you can always get someone to ghost write them for you, and social media has meant that you can create awareness of your views without getting in physical print. The web has increased the potential 'homes' for your writing, e.g. on other experts' blogs and forums and web sites which are portals for articles.  I am still getting my head around blogging, and Digg and Stumble Upon which are a bit like 'The X factor voting' by the public for articles, but one thing at a time, and once I have, I'll do a bulletin on this topic!

Five tips to make the most of writing articles

1) Make sure your articles contain key words relating to your specialism

2) Place your articles on the web for life long credibility and awareness, plus links back to your web site to improve search engine optimisation (SEO)

3) If writing isn't a skill you find easy, imagine you are speaking to an audience and record/use voice response software to create an article, or get someone to interview you and write down what you say

4) Create a clear structure with key points for your article, just as you would for an essay, and remember that images and quotes can speak a thousand words

5) Balance reviewing forward feature lists of your target publications with being proactive and suggesting topical themes and remember to build relationships with editors
