Keeping in touch - what's the answer? |
These days, people are so very busy, and knowing how to keep in touch so you're not forgotten without annoying contacts, colleagues and clients, is important.
It's clearer with some roles and professions than others, for example, the end of the financial year is not the best time to get undivided attention from your accountant, calling an editor when the media deadline approaches will not make you popular and any manager or director is best left in peace when the annual plans and budgets are being prepared.
So what is the answer? Asking people what they prefer is the best plan. Some people are very visual and prefer e mail, whereas others are auditory and prefer the phone. Some people are owls and other larks - if you want to speak with me, early is good - 7 a.m.?!
For some specific tips to keep in touch, read on.

1) Send a pertinent and ideally personalised card in the post to stand out from all those e mails
2) Be thoughtful and helpful e.g. send a useful article or invitation to a networking event
3) Use Linked In www.linkedin.com to forward interesting group discussions and useful connections to key people in your network
4) Connect different contacts to meet each other over breakfast or a teleseminar or webinar
