What is uncomfortable about uncertainty? |
|
Change is always changing! The only things we can be certain of in life are change, death and taxes!
Have you noticed that there's a lot of uncertainty about? The recent volcano and election outcome have been a very real reminder of this.
Uncertainty covers many areas; life expectancy, pension, job security, your employer being taken over, health, the impact of the downturn etc. So why is it that we find uncertainty so uncomfortable and have a big need to control things?
Uncertainty and change makes many people feel uncomfortable so they stay in houses, jobs and relationships that no longer suit them. I have seen people get ill, stressed and even have accidents so that they make a change and focus on it rather than avoid it.
By seeing uncertainty and change as opportunity, exciting and with a sense of curiosity and wonder, it completely changes our perspective on it.
What makes uncertainty feel more comfortable?
Some people are more risk averse than others, so options include:
- Insurance
- 'Planting different seeds' in a focused not random way
- Self-awareness/having a strong sense of self - personal development is key
- Contingency planning - 'what ifs' - think through the consequences
- Exploring your beliefs about change and uncertainty
- Having a clear plan/goal
- Choosing to go with the flow rather than fight it
- Having a clear plan and vision for your life and work, but being flexible to what happens along the way

Tips to embrace uncertainty
|
 - Read Susan Jeffers' book "Embracing Uncertainty"
- Reflect on times in your life when there was alot of uncertainty and it worked out ok - what helped you deal with it?
- Practice 'non-attachment' - accept whatever happens as the way it's meant to be - surrender to what is
- Reflect on the positives of uncertainty e.g. surprise rather than boredom
- Have a day in your diary with nothing planned and go with how your mood takes you
