What inhibits good talent line management? |
The downturn has dramatically changed supply and demand in the 'talent' market, but managing talent well can never go to the bottom of the 'to do list' for line managers.
Talent are hungry to take on new challenges, but often the company, HR and their line manager can get in the way, for example, giving people more challenging work is a strong engagement driver for 80% of people. Losing talent is an expense companies can ill afford, so what gets in the way of managing and engaging talent well and how can it be addressed? Common problems are:
· Line managers being jealous of talent's success and stopping their progress within the business
· Lack of time to have crucial one-to-one conversations which monitor how engaged talent are
· Line managers keeping the interesting projects for themselves, ones that talent would relish and stop them from looking elsewhere
· Company culture obsessed with profit instead of putting people first

1. Run a focus group with line managers to explore how the company gets in the way; what the issues are and generate ideas to tackle them
2. Introduce a mentoring scheme to support line managers and help them network for their own benefit
3. Set up an action learning set for line managers to share challenges and get support
4. Host a "Best Skills and Motivation Market" to unearth unused and underused skills and motivations
5. Support line managers through these tough times; help them develop a coaching style of management, give them time efficient ways of lightening the load e.g. forms, templates and resources via the intranet
