What role does internal communication play in employee engagement?

focus

Employee engagement is a massive topic affected by a multitude of factors and it takes years to build and a moment to break. A clear, well thought-out communication strategy helps stop it from breaking. This bulletin focuses on the role of internal communication and shares the best of what the 'Best companies to work for 2010' are doing.

People like to understand what's going on and feel nervous being in the dark. Internal communication helps employees feel involved and included but it needs to reflect the company culture and values and also the right media must be used for the target audience in order to create the desired response.

What score would you give your company for internal communication out of 100?

Practical employee engagement solutions

Internal communication liberates talent.

You cannot fail to communicate, so having a plan is wise to create the perceptions that you want and not the ones you don't. Employees pick up as much on what is not being said as well as what is, and self-awareness of non-verbal communication is crucial.  Communication is easier in small companies and technology can be an enabler, especially for multinational companies where travel is prohibitive due to cost or green issues.

Below are some practical internal communication solutions:

  • Have a morning/weekly meeting to connect, make announcements and discuss the day/week ahead

  • Present the company philosophy to all new recruits and have an extensive induction programme

  • Have quarterly company away days off site and combine with imaginative team building activities

  • Encourage proactivity with an ideas and suggestions box for work ideas and improving working life

  • Create accountability for directors to host lunches/meetings to get to know employees better

  • Create task teams to brainstorm business challenges and have accountability for forwarding the action

  • Cross-departmental action learning sets to promote understanding and problem solve

  • Result updates and question and answer Board sessions with all employees

  • Create employee forums and appoint engagement ambassadors to cascade input into initiatives
