Why is it vital to blow your own trumpet?
|
Do you dislike blowing your own trumpet? Would you like a promotion at work, have you ever felt frustrated at being passed over for a promotion or a project you knew you were perfect for?
Blowing your own trumpet and sharing your successes and value is essential whether you are employed or self employed. It comes easily to some people and others find it alien. Whilst there can be a fine line between arrogance and confidence, failure to promote yourself after you have secured a job or promotion can stop you from getting a future promotion and progressing in an organisation. If you have joined a new company, remember that this is especially important as you need to prove yourself, as getting a job offer is only the first step, especially if you have a probation period.
Blowing your own trumpet, as well as championing others combined with hard work and achievement is the best recipe for success and getting on. The old cliché, "it's not what you know but who you know" doesn't always hold true, but there is some truth in it.
There are always people who deliver little and seem to get on by playing politics, but this is a strategy that has a shelf life. Success on the coat-tails of someone else is hard to justify in black and white on your CV.

What inhibits people from blowing their own trumpet?
Many things stop people from promoting what they have achieved or 'blowing their own trumpet': |
-
 Modesty
- Believing good work will be noticed
- Not making time for it
- Work overload
- Failure to create clear self promotion objectives
- Busyness of stakeholders - not wanting to bother them
- Feeling that it is wrong to use time at work for this rather than what you are paid to do
- Shyness
- Feeling self conscious sharing successes
- Being someone who focuses on other people rather than yourself
- Working with a company with an over-emphasis on team work rather than individual recognition
- Being a woman - men find blowing their own trumpet easier
- Your boss or project sponsor taking the credit for your efforts to raise their own profile - at your expense

10 FREE tips to help you blow your own trumpet |
-
Identify key stakeholders in your organisation/client, i.e. influential people key to the future of the business and get to know their likes, dislikes and agendas
-
Ensure you know what issues are thought to be key to the business and make sure that you spend time each week whether it's part of your role or not, thinking about and taking action around these issues
-
It's easy to forget about blowing your own trumpet until it's too late, so set yourself a goal re what you want to achieve such as a promotion, getting a new project, creating a new role for yourself or simply getting a higher than average pay rise at the annual review
-
Network internally in departments outside your own
-
Nurture some supporters to champion you and help lobby on your behalf and promote you. Having someone else sing your praises can be better than singing your own, especially in the modest British culture
-
Seek out an internal influential coach or mentor to help you on the fast track to success
-
Be aware of any political sensitivities and respect them. Unwitting failure to do so could be your downfall, even if you are outstanding at your job/work
-
Dress for the next level up, not your current level
-
Don't forget the obvious, chat with your boss/project sponsor regularly and keep them updated about your successes and how you are doing in achieving your objectives and more
-
Make a note in your diary to blow your own trumpet each week as well as promote others you rate as it's easy to get busy and forget
