Dear Friends,

The World Cup brings together people from every continent for a few weeks every four years, but Kenya Connect is linking children around the world every day!  These connections are changing lives by making the world a little bit smaller and a whole lot better. I invite you to read about some of our new partnerships and projects!

Field Report: Mandarin in Kenya!
James

Kenya Connect marked another important first this month when one of our enrolled schools - Itunduni PS - hosted a visiting teacher from Suzhou Foreign Language School in Jiangso, China. Ms. Janet Brooks and her 10 year-old daughter, Nakeshia, are United States citizens who have been living, working and learning in China for the past 8 years.  Their visit was a joyful cultural exchange of unparalleled geographic reach. The Itunduni community shared songs and dances of the Kamba people, which Janet and Nakeshia will take back with them to their school in China. It was an exciting and memorable experience for the Itunduni students to hear Mandarin for their first time when Nakeshia stood up to greet the assembly.  We look forward to the first pen pal letters being exchanged with our new friends in China.

Peace & Blessings,

Partnership Spotlight: Mt. View Middle School

Mt. View Middle School of Marriotsville, MD has been our model middle school for the past six years. Each year the students have created board games that teach environmental science. The board games have been distributed to our two KC-sponsored solar-powered learning resource centers so that students at all of the 42 enrolled schools can take advantage of them. The Mt. View MS sixth grade team of teachers utilizes Kenya Connect's outreach programs for their annual service-learning project. While the students have officially partnered with Wamunyu Primary School, their sponsorship projects have assisted several other schools at out project site.

This summer a fourth water tank will be installed thanks to Mt. View's fundraising efforts. The school has also funded several other projects including the construction of a new classroom and a multitude of new sporting equipment.

New Schools:  Kiwi Connection

From inception, Kenya Connect has envisioned schools across the globe connecting with children in Kenya to foster a greater understanding of diverse cultures, world geography, and the many things we all have in common. While the majority of our partnerships involve schools from the U.S., the Outram School of New Zealand is our latest "overseas" partner (and our first from the Southern Hemisphere).

"With our help, students must build strong foundations for their personal square. Inside this square, we guide them as they develop and organize a host of skills. But our most special challenge is to create an environment in which students grow powerful enough to burst outside the square. If we are successful, they will enter a galaxy of lively thinking, dreams and visions."

We at Kenya Connect are proud to be a part of their vision and look forward to building lasting friendships with our newest pen pals.

We also want to congratulate our Kiwi friends for a good showing at the World Cup!
