The Incubator at MAGNET Update - March 2011
|
Greetings!
 | | Flickr: Theresa Thompson | Some quick facts we all need right about now:
- Indians home opener is just three weeks away
- March Equinox is less than two weeks away
- We "Spring ahead" our clocks three short days from now
All this is adding up to the reawakening of Spring, my favorite season. It seems like we deserve it this year more than ever after the winter we had. We'll surely have another snow or two (tonight, apparently), but warmer days are are just around the corner. I've got a short update this month; information on free, basic IP assistance available to the region, and some great media attention for one of our incubator companies. Murphy IP Clinics
One of the support resources I'm lucky to have in my incubator is on-site IP assistance through Murphy IP. Cindy Murphy, the firm's founder, is a mechanical engineer (BSME, Georgia Institute of Technology, 1982), a licensed Professional Engineer (Ohio 1987), a licensed Attorney (Ohio 1988) , a federally registered Patent Attorney (USPTO 1988), and a LEED AC professional (2009). She has over 20 years of experience reviewing and evaluating inventions for patentability and infringement issues. Having a patent attorney who is also an engineer is a perfect match for our focus of high-tech, engineered products companies.
One of the ways we make Cindy's expertise available to the region is through monthly "IP Clinics". The second Friday of every month, technology entrepreneurs may sign-up for patent and trademark assistance, one hour at a time, and meet with Murphy IP at no cost.
Here is what Cindy says is reasonable to expect can be accomplished in these one hour sessions: "We can offer consultation on a range of intellectual property issues, our advice being tailored to the needs of a particular client. For example, we can provide date-of-conception documentation and invention assignment forms for completion and execution during appointments. We will also offer quick-and-easy labeling recommendations for copyrights and trademarks While we certainly will not be able to perform right-to-market clearances or prepare patent applications during this short time period, we can provide guidance as to the necessary (and most economic) means of protection. You should encourage clients to bring all IP-related files (paper and/or electronic) to the clinic. Please assure clients that any information shared during clinics is protected by the attorney-client privilege and we cannot divulge this information to anyone without their permission. We will also be asking each client to sign a confirmation that our involvement in this clinic will not be used to challenge our firm's representation in related technology. (This is a good-Samaritan-like shield, so that one hour of free consultation cannot prevent us from accepting work from a paying client five years from now.)" The Incubator at MAGNET, in conjunction with Murphy IP, has been offering these clinics for over a year now. However, from talking to partners in region recently, I've found out there was some confusion as to whether the clinics were still being offered and who could attend. These no-cost IP clinics are still being offered the second Friday of every month. If you are or work with an high-tech, early stage, engineered product start-up who could benefit from the IP-related services described above, call Cindy Murphy at 216.881.8316. They are available to any qualified entrepreneur region-wide. You do not have to be a MAGNET client or a Cuyahoga County resident to take advantage of this generous program Cindy has made available. |

Tenant NewsThis past month has been an exciting one for OsteoSymbionics. Osteo's custom-crafted skull implants received two very high profile media mentions. First, the company's product was featured prominently in an article on The Daily, a news application developed for the iPad platform. I particularly like this article and accompanying video as they highlights the profound impact OsteoSymbionic's product can have on a patient's quality of life. Osteo's second highlight was even more high profile: as part of an episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition. OsteoSymbionic's product was used to repair skull damage a soldier received after being shot just above his right ear while on tour in Iraq. While not mentioning the company by name, starting at around the three minute mark of the show, you can see a replica of the soldier's skull and the OsteoSymbionic implant that was created. Too often we can get caught up in the business plans and the chase for funding, and we forget the impact technology can have on individual's lives. These media mentions are great PR for OsteoSymbionics and will probably fuel some growth, but being able to see the tangible, transformative effect their product can have is a real treat for me.
