The Incubator at MAGNET
Update - October 2010
MAGNET Innovation Center
Greetings!

Autumn officially hit us in September, and the recent cold, rainy weather seemed right on cue, but the forecast for the weekend couldn't be nicer.  Personally, I'm hoping for an Indian Summer sometime soon, but just in case I'll be outside most of the weekend enjoying the sunshine.

I've got another new tenant to tell you about this month, as well as congratulations for a current tenant.  For those entrepreneurs out there contemplating bringing on an intern for the first time, I have details of a program that might be exactly what you're looking for.

New Tenant: Alienworks
Relocating here from Georgia, The Incubator at MAGNET is excited to provide start-up space and assistance to Alienworks.  An ICE sector start-up (Instruments, Controls and Electronics), Alienworks has a variety of unique antenna and communications solutions and has already caught the attention of NASA.  I'm sure we'll hear more about Alienworks in the future.
Congratulations VADXX!
VADXX Energy, a tenant both here at MAGNET and down in Akron at the AGBA, recently participated in the E-TAG funding program, through the joint venture, Akros Equipment Company, they have created to manufacture their production units.

Working with MAGNET product development, The MAGNET/Akros proposal was approved and $50,000 was awarded for the final design of the production unit's feedstock input system.
Getting The Most Out Of Your Intern
Interns are a great way to increase your start-ups capacity without the expense of a full time hire.  However, if you've never brought on an intern before you may have questions as to use them effectively:
  • How do I define goals for my intern?
  • What kind of compensation will get me the talent I'm looking for?
  • How do I effectively onboard the intern and orient them to my company?
  • How will I know if I got my money's worth?
The good folks over at NOCHE have a program to help you answer those questions and more.  Offered two more times this year (in the Cleveland and Canton areas), NOCHE's Maximize Your ROI: Return On Intern workshop is geared toward helping entrepreneurs and small business owners start an internship program or improve an existing one:

"This is a workshop, with the emphasis on work. At the end of the four hour session, participants will have created an Internship Program Plan that specifically meets their business' needs and is ready to implement.

The development of the Internship Program Plan will be facilitated by NOCHE staff and is built on years of experience working with employers, managing NEOintern.net, and extensive market research with Northeast Ohio businesses and college students."
