Homelessness and Mental Illness Facts
From the NAMI Policy Research Institute
At least one-third of the homeless population has a mental illness.
* Mental illness and the lack of needed services as well as substance abuse and the lack of needed services are the second and third most frequently sited reasons for homelessness, respectively.
* Nearly 55,000 homeless people access substance abuse and mental health services on any given day.
* In every state Supplemental Security Income (SSI) fails to cover the Fair Market Rent for a one-bedroom apartment.
Homeless people with mental illness suffer more than other homeless people.
* Homeless people with mental illness remain homeless longer than the rest of the homeless population.
* People with mental illness are disproportionately represented in the chronically homeless population.
* Homeless people with mental illness encounter more barriers to employment, are in poorer physical health and have more contact with the legal system than homeless people without mental illness.
Permanent supportive housing is key to helping homeless people with mental illness.
* Only 5-7% of homeless people with mental illness require institutionalization; 95-98% could live in the community.
* 80% of people who are given the chance to live in supportive housing stay at least one year.
* Supportive housing for people with mental illness reduced: emergency room visits by 57%, hospitalizations by 58%, detoxification services by more than 80%, and public mental health residential program facility use by 100%.
* Supportive housing reduces the use of public services, saving an average of $16,282 annually.
With appropriate investment in permanent supportive housing, chronic homelessness for people with mental illness can be ended within the next decade. This would result in savings of billions of dollars for states and communities by relieving the burden currently placed on emergency rooms, various social services and the criminal justice system.

Take Action Now!
Tell Them, "No more cuts"
NAMI Illinois, the Mental Health Summit and many mental health service providers are undertaking a collaborative effort to protect vital community mental health services.
As you may know, Governor Quinn's budget proposes what amounts to a 40% cut in funding for capacity grants for community mental health services. We must do everything we can to persuade the state legislature to protect funding for these programs, especially since the Governor is also proposing to close two state psychiatric hospitals and have the people who would have received treatment there rely instead on community mental health programs!
Together with State Representative Fred Crespo, a strong supporter of mental health services, the group has put together a petition that Mr. Crespo hopes to use to assist in rallying our other legislative allies and champions to ensure "no more cuts" for community mental health services.
Please send, e-mail or fax your completed petitions to NAMI Illinois' offices. NAMI Illinois will collect them and deliver them to Representative Crespo who will then present them to his colleagues and to the appropriate legislative committees. NAMI Illinois' contact information is printed at the bottom of the petition.
There is no fixed deadline for returning the petitions, but the next two weeks are critical. The sooner we get them in, the better. We want to apply serious pressure right away so legislators know, before budget negotiations really begin, that this is a matter they need to take very seriously. P.S. All legislators are on break until April 17th so call or make an appointment to see them while they're in home districts. Our message is simple... Mental Health Matters To Us; No More Cuts!

Supportive Housing Options
Source: CSH's (Corporation for Supportive Housing) national Seven Dimensions of Quality in Supportive Housing Range of Housing Settings, Models, and Approaches to Service Delivery
There is no single model for supportive housing's design or for the approach to service delivery. The housing settings may vary dramatically based on a range of factors, including tenants' preferences, the type of housing stock available, and the norms and history of a community's real estate market.
Housing settings for supportive housing units include:
The mix of services will vary depending on who is being housed and their individualized service needs. In general, the supportive services are designed to support tenants' ability to: retain their housing; sustain good health and manage on-going health and disability-related concerns; access and retain meaningful employment, and increase their skills and income; make connections to the larger community; and achieve greater self- reliance. To be effective, the services must anticipate the needs of the target population, but must also be flexible and responsive to the needs of each tenant household. In promoting housing stability, service providers focus on: helping tenants meet their lease obligations, including paying rent; maintaining a safe and healthy living environment; allowing others the peaceful enjoyment of their homes; and complying with the terms and conditions of the lease and any related house rules. The coordination and delivery of services may happen on or off-site of the housing. Providers may deliver services directly and also facilitate connections to services in the community, such as: individual and family counseling; mental health services; alcohol and substance use services; crisis intervention; childcare; medical care; employment services, including vocational counseling, job placement, and retention services; and many other supportive services. Supportive housing staff also work to foster community-building efforts among tenants and to foster engagement with the surrounding community. Read more about CSH

"Ten Things Parents Want Residential Providers to Know."
Posted by Lisa Lambert
This list is a result of many heartfelt conversations, moments of humor and often exasperation shared by dozens of parents over the years.
Number 10. See me as part of the solution, not just part of the problem. Let me know what you're finding is effective and what isn't working - I've been through failures before and I know they are part of the process. Number 6. Don't call me Mom (or Dad). |

Educational Programs Helping schools reach out to children with mental illness
 |
PARENTS AND TEACHERS AS ALLIES:
Parents and Teachers as allies was created to help families and school professionals identify the key warning signs of early-onset mental illnesses in children and adolescents in our schools. The program is intended to provide an educational tool for advancing mutual understanding and communication between families and school professionals. This program is designed for two-hour teacher in-services, parent PTA sponsored evenings, and mental health professional classes.
RED FLAGS: Red Flags is a depression awareness program for middle school students. It is generally taught in health classes and takes 3-5 class periods. The teacher can choose between 2 DVD's: "Claire's Story," or "Thick'n Thin," a more recent story of teenage depression. Two additional DVD's go with the program, as well as suggested class activites, information on mental illness and discussion topics.
ENDING THE SILENCE: Ending the Silence is a high school health class presentation, typically presented during the mental health portion of the curriculum. This interactive program teaches the basic signs and symptoms of mental illnesses in teenagers, presents personal stories to reduce stigma, and provides many resource materials for students.

Planned Giving: You can plan the giving from your estate with the help of an attorney using a number of legal mechanisms, such as a charitable remainder trust, that may enable you to maintain your estate, provide for yourself and your family, and leave a lasting legacy. Sponsorship of Events or NAMI-DKK Programs: Opportunities to donate to NAMI-DKK include sponsoring events such as our Dinner/raffle and our annual Run/Walk. You can designate funds for specific programs. Employer Matching Donations How do I secure a matching gift for my donation to NAMI-DKK? Contact your Human Resources Department to find out if your company has a Matching Gift Program. If they have a matching gift program, your company likely uses one of two ways to secure your additional matching gift to NAMI-DKK: (Most common) Obtain your company's matching gift form, fill out the "Donor" section, and mail it to NAMI-DKK when you send your donation. NAMI-DKK will complete the "Charity" section of the form, and mail it back to your company. This will confirm that we received your gift and request their matching gift. (Less common) Make your donation to NAMI-DKK through the mail or phone. Upon receipt of your gift, NAMI-DKK will send a letter acknowledging your contribution. Bring this letter to your Matching Gift program coordinator who will distribute your company's matching gift to NAMI-DKK. Why should I give a matching gift to NAMI-DKK? Matching gift programs allow you to allocate your company's charitable dollars to the cause nearest and dearest to you heart, greatly increasing your donation's value to NAMI-DKK. What's more, NAMI-DKK considers your corporation's matching gift as part of your total contribution. Therefore, your $50 gift can become a $100 or $150 gift to NAMI-DKK. So please -- go ahead and make a donation to NAMI-DKK today!
