Agitation System Maintenance
At SDI we use mechanical or venturi jet agitation depending on the sprayer configuration. Mechanical agitation system | The mechanical agitation system usually consists of a stainless steel shaft with stainless steel paddles. The shaft mechanism turns in combination with the pump and engine creating turbulence in the fluid in the spray tank.
Maintenance of the mechanical system involves monitoring the packing gland area. You can tighten the packing nut or replace the packing material if it starts to drip excessively.
Next month we will go over maintaining your jet agitation system. |

Finished tank ready for fittings | All of us at SDI are proud of the commercial grade fiberglass spray tanks we build here. Good looking, long lasting and repairable, we build our own tanks so we can control the quality of this important component. This allows us to offer a five year limited warranty on our spray tanks. I thought you'd like to see what is involved in building a SDI spray tank. If you are familiar with the process of building a fiberglass boat, you will find this very comparable.
We have custom made, two piece molds which are prepared for theMold coated with Gelcoat | first step in construction, the application of the gelcoat. All our tanks have a color impregnated gelcoat and are not painted. Gelcoat has the advantage of a long lasting, deep finish. On older tanks, faded gelcoat can be buffed to look like it did when new. We use a gelcoat finish because paint on a spray tank will peel and flake off when exposed to the chemicals used in many applications.
After about an hour the gelcoat has cured and we start to apply the fiberglass. In this process the fiberglass is chopped into one inch lengths Rolling out the fiberglass | and sprayed into the mold along with the resin and catalyst. We typically apply two coats of fiberglass which is rolled out to an even thickness. In addition to creating an even thickness, rolling eliminates air bubbles which are potential areas of weakness in the finished tanks.
After the application of the fiberglass, the tank is cured. The curing time varies depending upon the time of year (temperature) and the amount of catalyst used in the resin but is no less than 24 hours. After curing, the finished part is removed from the mold and trimmed.
Now the two tank halves are joined and glued together to formClamped and glued tank | a completed tank. We then laminate and place fiberglass covering on the internal seam. This additional layer of fiberglass adds to the strength and prevents against leaks.
After lamination, the tank is inspected for cosmetic flaws. The unit is tested and allowed to sit for at least 1 hour to make sure there are no leaks. After testing, the tank then moves on to the final assembly area where the fittings, frame, pump and engine are added.
The use of fiberglass offers the advantages of low profile tank designs and light weight to name just two. We can easily split many of our tanks into multiple compartments to make your sprayer even more versatile. Tanks with capacities of 300 gallons or more include a standard baffle to improve stability. We build our tanks with sizes ranging from 30 gallons all the way up to 1000 gallons.
