Line Strainer Maintenance

Your line strainer is an often overlooked component of your spray system. Obviously, the strainer strains out debris from your spray solution, but it also provides protection for your pump.

Strainer 1

A blocked or partially blocked line strainer will impact your pump performance by reducing flow. Also if your pump performance has drastically degraded, don't forget to check the condition of the screen in the line strainer.

Even with a clean water source you can still get debris from incompletely dissolved powders, fertilizers or flowable chemicals. Sometimes you'll even discover undissolved water soluble bags in the screen. I talked to one person who even found a small frog (deceased) in their strainer.

The use of a strainer basket with too fine a mesh can cause torn diaphragms in a diaphragm pump or seal failure in a centrifugal pump. We typically recommend that you equip our sprayers with a 40 mesh screen.

After all this, if you feel you are spending too much time cleaning your tip strainers, you might consider a line strainer placed just before your control valves to provide additional filtering prior to the spray reaching the boom. This is one place you could safely use a screen with a finer mesh.

The line strainer is cheap insurance for your pump and spray system, don't forget to check and clean it frequently!

Economy Spray Booms

15' Economy Boom
Economy Boom

The SDI Economy Spray Boom offers an economical way to get SDI quality and reliability in a less expensive package. This boom is offered in 15, 20 or 25 foot lengths with the option of 10 or 20 inch nozzle spacing.

Economy Boom features include:

Stainless Steel Wet Boom
Bi-directional breakaway hinges on the boom wings
Single nozzle bodies with drip free diaphragm check valves
The boom wings can fold forward parallel to the ground or up to a vertical position.

SDI can easily customize this boom for you. You can get different nozzle spacing or add the triple nozzle bodies for maximum application flexibility. As an example of customization, we recently built a 15 foot boom for a agricultural customer with spacing that corresponded to their row spacing.

The SDI Economy Boom can be equipped with our manual, electric or computerized controls. This boom is considered a manual lift boom and is not adaptable for use with electric lift actuators. The single nozzle bodies have TP11008VP polymer spray tips.

If you need a less expensive alternative to our Optimum Turf Boom, consider our Economy Boom when looking at your next sprayer purchase or an upgrade of your current spray equipment.
