A time to help our neighbors...
As you all know, Or Chadash is a sponsor Temple in the Interfaith Hospitality Network. This means that twice a year we host the families who are homeless from our county and staying in Church for shelter. We partner with the Flemington Presbyterian Church and for two nights we stay at that church, visit with the families, provide and share dinner with them and spend the night.
Our next opportunity to help is Monday, December 19th and Wednesday, December 21st.

Teen summer programs in Israel are recognized not only as spectacular opportunities for fun and friendship but as defining and transforming Jewish growth experiences as well. All those who care deeply about ensuring a vibrant Jewish future appreciate the impact of a substantive Israel program on young people.
What can you expect your children to accomplish during their summer in Israel? What are the benefits of this wonderful opportunity?

| Rabbi's Message | |
What is the meaning of Hanukkah? There are many answers. Some are filled with the myths that entertain children; some are scholarly treatises on the history of the Greco-Assyrians and the Kingdom of Judea. No matter the comprehensiveness of the answer, every year I am asked by adults and children if the oil really lasted for eight days.
I have been discussing the real meaning of Hanukkah with our religious school students and wanted to share what they have been learning with our entire congregation. Rabbi Hara Person, the editor of the URJ Press, has written a wonderful synopsis of this topic. I share it with you in its entirety below.
Shalom and Chag Hanukkat Sameach,
Rabbi Joseph M. Forman
Will the Real Hanukah Please Stand Up
Hara Person
Hanukah can be a confusing holiday. There are two basic versions of the story of Hanukah, at opposite ends of the spectrum. There is the nice kid's story about brave heroes, miracles, good guys and bad guys.
And from the history books, there is a story that involves violence, warfare, Jew fighting against Jew, and lots of ugly politics. So what do these two stories have to do with each other? What is the real story of Hanukah?

| Ner Shel Tzeddakah | |
Once again, Or Chadash is proud to support Ner Shel Tzeddakah. We encourage individuals to devote the 6th night of Hanukkah in order to raise awareness of the problems of poverty and to help those in our community who are in need. Please send a donation to OC approximating the value of the gifts that would otherwise be exchanged on the sixth night of Hanukkah. We will provide the donors with a "certificate" to use in lieu of the Hanukkah gift for that night. Proceeds will be sent this year to Jewish Family Services. In turn, JFS seeks help from volunteers as they "provide support for life's challenges, one person, one family at a time."
Whatever you give will help someone in need and make them feel a part of the community.
We hope you will click here to participate in Ner Shel Tzedakkah! Thanks in advance.

| Thuy Blumenfeld - Bat Mitzvah | |
Thuy Blumenfeld, daughter of Ray Blumenfeld and Audrey Hackel, became a Bat Mitzvah on December 3, 2011. She is a seventh grader at the Clinton Township Middle School and enjoys singing, reading, drawing, and horseback riding. Thuy's Torah portion, Vayetzei, tells the story of Jacob's journey from Beersheva to work for his uncle Laban in Haran, and his dream of angels on his way there. Thuy is enjoying her Mitzvah project at Riding With Heart, where she works with autistic children learning to ride horses in a therapeutic setting. She also helps out at America's Grow-A-Row whenever she has time. Thuy is excited to share her Bat Mitzvah celebration with family, friends, and classmates.
|
| Michelle Fishbeyn - Bat Mitzvah | |
Michelle Fishbeyn became a Bat Mitzvah on December 3rd. She is the daughter of Alla and Vlad Fishbeyn. Michelle is a seventh grader at JP Case Middle School. She enjoys running, dance, and hanging out with her friends. Michelle's Torah Portion, Vayishlach, focuses on Jacobs journey to see his brother and him getting his name changed to Israel. Michelle's mitzvah project was volunteering at Independence Manor, an assisted living home for the elderly. She really enjoyed helping all the residents there. Michelle is really excited to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah with her closest family and friends.
|
| Annie Fuhrman - Bat Mitzvah | |
Annie Fuhrman will become a Bat Mitzvah on December 17. She is the daughter of Faith Corey Fuhrman and Joseph Fuhrman. Annie is a seventh grader at the Clinton Township Middle School. She enjoys horseback riding, choir, gymnastics, and track (high jump and long jump are her favorites). Annie's Torah portion, Miketz, focuses on Joseph who worked hard to interpret dreams for many people including himself and the Pharaoh. She learned that listening skills like Joseph had are a special talent. She learned talents get you places but you have to work hard to get there. Annie is greatly enjoying her Mitzvah project volunteering at Allie's Kids, an equestrian program targeted at both children diagnosed with Autism and other special needs and their siblings. Students in the program are provided with both horseback riding and other horsemanship opportunities such as grooming skills and barn management. Annie is looking forward to celebrating her Bat Mitzvah with her friends, family and the community.
|
| Josh Weinberg - Bar Mitzvah | |
Joshua Weinberg, son of Andrea and Paul and younger brother to Matthew, will become a Bar Mitzvah on December 17. When not attending to his studies at JP Case Middle School in Flemington, he keeps busy with playing guitar and trumpet, training in Tae Kwon Do, and preparing for his dream of someday working with platypuses. Josh's mitzvah project consisted of providing birthday gifts for children who benefit from the Flemington Food Pantry. His Torah portion, Vayeishev, conveys the message of brotherly love. There is no greater support or friendship than one's brother. When all goes awry, one can depend on family to lend a guiding hand, and a brother to lead one away from life's skirmishes. Josh is looking forward to becoming a bar mitzvah and celebrating with family and friends.
