| President's Message | |

Dear Members of Or Chadash,
Summer is now well over and fall, if not winter, has come rushing back on us. I tend to think of fall as a time to rebuild community after a long summer of fun and play with family.
That is no different here at Or Chadash. Despite our well attended BBQ (with thanks to Cook Bob Levy) and reading by Joel Chasnoff (with thanks to Betsy Zalaznick for organizing), the summer months were slow around our synagogue. But now, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, with wonderfully moving services from Rabbi Forman and Cantor Robin Sparr-Rothman, kicked off a year full of activity. Our Sukkah went up with a delicious bagel breakfast and enthusiastic group of volunteers. It came down last weekend having endured the remarkable weather this year, and we want to thank Darren Loew, Gary Peckman and many others for their help.
In addition, Torah Scrolls were proudly unfurled around our sanctuary for Simchat Torah (literally: rejoicing the Torah) as we signified that the learning process never ends as we conclude Deuteronomy and begin reading from Genesis. The new member breakfast was hit for those attending and I want to thank Chef David Orlans for his culinary wizardry as well as Jaimee Gold for all her organizing. Lest I forget, Religious School is well underway with exciting new programming for our post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students and increased music for all from Student Cantor Kathy Gohr.
The year will continue with immediate upcoming events such as Taste of Judaism - part II on November 2, 9, and 16 at 7PM, congregational trip to Brooklyn on November 13 and our Israeli wine tasting event on November 19 (see information and link below to sign up). More programming is underway for winter and spring so watch your emails and come join your Or Chadash family in one or more events.

President

| Israeli Wine Tasting | | |
Join us on
Saturday, November 19 at 5:30 PM
for an Israeli Wine Tasting
Please join your fellow congregants for a relaxed evening of fun that will be informative and tasty as we sample a variety of stellar Israeli wines. Congregant Barry Drill, who has years of experience tasting and collecting wines, and is our newly anointed wine connoisseur, will give a presentation on each, sharing a bit of history on Israeli wines, discussing the region and letting us know how they stack up in the world of wine. We will also enjoy some delicious hors d'oeuvres. Seats are limited, so please sign up early.
The cost is $50 per person.
Click here to register to attend this event. Please register by Friday, November 11.
Here is a "taste" of what we will be sampling:
1. Yatir Forest Cabernet 2007 A full-bodied Bordeaux blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot and 10% Merlot. A third aged in new and two-thirds aged in old wood barriques for 15 months, this deep royal-purple wine casts intense orange and green reflections. Soft tannins integrating beautifully and the intentionally gentle hand with the wood come together nicely to let the wine open with spicy berry and cassis aromas and flavors, those going on to show blackberries and an underlying and fascinating melanage of bitter herbs. Long generous and destined for elegance. --Daniel Rogov 93 points!
2. Domaine du Castel Grand Vin 2007 A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the balance of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Firm, solid and concentrated, this dark ruby, full-bodied wine opens to show intense, caressing and generous aromas and flavors of berries, black cherries, currants and bitter chocolate, and, on the long finish, a hint of crystallized fruits. Dense, near-sweet and remarkably rich, with a gripping and mouth-filling long finish. Muscular but gentle, intense but elegant. Best from 2010-2016. --Daniel Rogov 94 points
3. Binyamina Reserve Shiraz 2007 Variety- 98% Shiraz & 2% Viognier. The wine has an intense red color and impressive scents of forest berries, black pepper and toasted wood with hues of vanilla and chocolate. A complex wine with a pleasantly smooth and lingering finish. Wine Enthusiast Score- 90 points
4. Ella Valley - Sauvignon Blanc, 2009 (Advance Tasting): Blended with 10% of Semillon, showing light gold in color, deeply aromatic with grapefruit and pear l fruits supported comfortably by lively notes of tropical fruits that toy on the palate. Long and harmonious, easy to drink and simultaneously complex. If ever a wine deserved to be called "jazzy", this is that wine. Daniel Rogov -Tentative Score 90-92.

| Jordan Strauss - Bar Mitzvah | |
Jordan Strauss, son of Joe Strauss and the late Carolyn McAllister, and grandson of Katy McAllister, became a Bar Mitzvah on November 5, 2011. His Torah portion was Lech Lecha and one issue it raised is the question of whether it is ever okay to lie to save someone. Jordan attends JP Case Middle School and is in the 7th grade program. He enjoys sports such as baseball, basketball, lacrosse and football. He especially loves hanging with friends and his sister Rachel Strauss, age 16. |
