| Rabbi's Message | |
Dear Members of our Or Chadash Community,
This week our Jewish calendar reminds us of the joys of living as we celebrate the festival of Sukkot - known as Zman Simchateinu, the season of our rejoicing. These days - and especially in America -- Sukkot is perhaps one of the least understood of the major festivals despite it being the origination of our Thanksgiving. We all joke that the Jewish holidays are early or late but never on time. But most of all, they all come at once. I often wish that we could spread them out a bit. In truth, though, they are all interrelated. We move from the sense of renewal that Rosh Hashanah brings us to the introspective time of Yom Kippur - a day to reflect on our values, our deeds and our hopes. Days later we turn to Sukkot to awaken us to the finite nature of our lives and the urgency of getting on with whatever commitments we intend to fulfill in the year ahead. If we expect to change, now, our tradition and the holiday of Sukkot urge, is the time to make that transformation - no matter how challenging. As part of our High Holyday season we express gratitude for our many gifts and rejoice in the abundance of our blessings.
I spoke this Yom Kippur morning about our synagogue and the wonderful community that Or Chadash is able to boast - for a myriad of reasons. Among them I enumerated the learning that takes place within the walls of 149 Foothill Road. I am well aware that Jewish learning takes place in realms that extend far beyond the physical limits of our building. Moreover, I encourage it!
Many in our community were able to view and discuss the critically acclaimed animated videos I previewed at our Yom Kippur study session. I have shared them with students of our religious school and invite all of you to see them, as well. They can be seen on-line here. These videos challenge us to reconsider our sense of the fundamental purpose of forgiving and offer us a realistic manner in which we might repair the relationships we need to mend. I urge you to spend ten minutes watching each of them.
And while you're on the web, please take a moment to view the installation of Cantor Ross Wolman, one of our former student cantors, at his new synagogue, congregation B'nei Jehoshua Beth Elohim in Chicago. Ross invited me to speak at this joyous simcha. The Shabbat service is terrific. Feel free to watch the entire service -which begins just after the 30-minute mark. My remarks begin at the 90-minute mark. Or Chadash has been an integral part of the education of so many of the Jewish leaders coming out of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion - School of Sacred Music in NY. It is something that we can all take pride in and celebrate.
Wishing you a season of rejoicing.
Shalom,
Rabbi Joseph M. Forman |

| Welcome to our newest Religious School students | | |

|
| In appreciation of our 8th-12th Grade Families | | |
We would like to honor and recognize the families and students (listed below) as they are affirming the importance of Jewish education by enrolling their children in our 8th, 9th and 10th as well as our 10th, 11th and 12th grade programs at Or Chadash. Although our students are very mature, they are not the "driving" force in the family. We say todah rabbah, thank you, to the parents of our students, too. During these most holy days of the year, as we take time to look inward, we want to also take a moment to recognize and acknowledge this most treasured partnership. Or Chadash and the greater Jewish community are all the beneficiaries of your on-going commitment to the Jewish education of your children. Yasher Koach - May you go from strength to strength.

| Reform Movement Condemns Israel Mosque Burning | |
Monday, October 3, 2011, the leaders of the Reform movement condemned an arson attack on a mosque in the Israeli Arab village of Tuba Zangaria, and announced the establishment of a fund that would be used to rebuild the mosque. Click here to read the article.
President of the Union for Reform Judaism Rabbi Eric Yoffie said, "We condemn these acts of hatred in the strongest possible terms. They are inexcusable and do not reflect Jewish values at any time, and are especially reprehensible during these, our high holy days. We stand by the State of Israel in her commitment to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice swiftly and to provide safety and religious freedom to all Israeli citizens."
Now is the time to demonstrate that we can help build a more inclusive, pluralistic, democratic Israeli society, especially in the face of criminal actions against an Israeli place of worship.
Join ARZA, in cooperation with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), The Central Conference of Reform Rabbis (CCAR) The Israel Reform Movement (IMPJ) and the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC), in raising money to help refurbish the desecrated mosque.
Click here to donate online, or send a check to ARZA, 633 Third Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, New York 10017with the notation "Tuba Zangaria Mosque Fund."

Sincerely,
Rabbi Daniel Allen Executive Director, ARZA

| Paul Goral - Bar Mitzvah | |
Paul Goral will become a Bar Mitzvah on October 22, 2011. His Torah portion is B'reshit. It is from the first book of the Bible called Genesis. It reflects on the time when God created heaven and earth. This inspired Paul to take care of God's creations for his Mitzvah project. He held a food drive in his neighborhood and donated the food to the Flemington food pantry. Paul cleaned up several roadsides in his community of trash and recyclables. He also volunteered at Rolling Hills nursing home. Paul's mother and father, Danielle and Robert Goral, are so proud of Paul, as well as his two brothers, Casey and Jeremy, and sisters, Jessica and Victoria. |
