Update on OC's Organic Garden
The organic garden we all worked on on Mitzvah Day is thriving. Thanks to all of you who helped, but particularly to Erika Lewy, Aaron Lewy and Liz Tracey who have been watering it since May. Four bags of produce (yellow squash, zucchini and cucumbers) have made their way to the Food Pantry so far, but now that the tomatoes are beginning to ripen, we could use a volunteer to pick and deliver once a week. Please contact Estelle Breines at elka6301@embarqmail.com if you are available. |

President's Message | |
Shalom. As your new President, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jeff Berg. My wife, Christine, and I have three children, Jacob (age 12), Jonatha (age 10) and Dylan (age 4). We live in the town of Clinton. We joined Or Chadash seven years ago. I joined the Board two years ago. The positive religious and community experiences over these seven years including such recent ones as saying the motzi over the still hot Matzah from Bobolink, Mitzvah day and Kabbalat Shabbat coupled with my initial involvement on the Board "whet my appetite" for more involvement.
One thing that is very clear to me is that our congregation is filled with passionate individuals who want to enhance the religious experience all our members seek. Everyone has so many ideas - big and small. What I hope to do is to reach out to as many of you as possible over the course of my presidency to listen to those ideas, share them with Rabbi Forman, Betsy Zalaznick, Board Committees and the full Board. Together, you and I and our leadership will strengthen both the social and spiritual aspects of our temple lives.
The key to this objective is your participation. I wish every member of our congregation will actively contribute to making improvements a reality. I appreciate that we all live busy lives, but simply asking for things to get done will not always work in a congregation of our size.
We can all start this summer. Rabbi Forman and Liz Tracy, our Religious Practices Chair, have put together some exciting programming for the summer including guest speaker Rabbi Victor Appell, a meet the new Board of Trustees BBQ, a guest author book reading, signing and discussion by Joel Chasnoff all coupled with relaxed Kabbalat Shabbat services.
Please try to find some time to attend a service or event. Let me or Rabbi Forman know how we can meet your needs. I look forward to seeing you and speaking with you. If you want to reach me, my email is president@orchadash-nj.org.

Book Review by Or Chadash Member, Bea Abrams

When Larry and I returned from our vacation, I saw an announcement in the Temple newsletter that the Rabbi would be discussing Joel Chasnoff's book, "the 188th Crybaby Brigade". Our vacation included two days in Israel, and I had come home with new questions about my Jewish identity. The book looked like a perfect fit for my new quandaries...and was it ever! I haven't been so excited about a book in a long time. During services this past Shabbat, Betsy announced that she actually had managed to get the author---Mr. Chasnoff-- to come to the temple to talk. I was ecstatic.
I am still searching for my identity, but what a treat it will be to listen to Mr. Chasnoff talk about his search in person.
Joel Chasnoff's memoire, "The 188th Crybaby Brigade" had me laughing out loud. At the same time, it provided poignant explorations of the culture, politics and attitudes of Israelis, the relationship of a Jew to the state of Israel, and what it means to be Jewish. After finishing college and failing to make the big time as a stand-up comedian, Mr. Chasnoff enlisted in the Israeli army. The book hilariously chronicles his experiences as an "enlistee" in the army and as an American Jew in Israel. Understanding what it means to be Jewish isn't easy. Using humor, the author explores this question in a meaningful and truly engaging manner - High quality food for thought in a truly digestible format. |
Book Review by Joanne Palmer: The 188th Crybaby Brigade By Joel Chasnoff
Joel Chasnoff grew up an observant Conservative Jew in suburban Chicago, and he is now an observant Conservative Jew in Riverdale. He is also a stand-up comic, able to make his living telling jokes. (Who knew that was really possible?)
Between then and now Joel took a year-long detour into the Israel army. That's not so unusual, but unlike most young Americans who make aliyah to join the IDF, he joined a combat unit. He tells his story about his attempt to live out his lifelong dream as a real Israeli in The 188th Crybaby Brigade, a book that improbably but truly had me both laughing (snorting through my nose, in fact) and sobbing (not hard, I admit, but still...) on the subway.
As poignant as Joel's look at army life is, and both as specific to the Israeli condition (the soldiers' mothers demanded that their sons not skip snacks, so there is a scene where they stop tank training, wearing combat gear, to sit in an officially m andated circle and eat chocolate sandwiches) and to all armies (these soldiers are 18 years old, so they are both men and boys), there is a twist. Joel's mother converted to Judaism with an Orthodox beit din, before he was born, before she was married, because she was so drawn to Judaism. He and his brothers went to Schechter schools, Camp Ramah, and USY. But when he fell in love with an Israeli woman and they wanted to marry, the official municipal rabbi did not allow it. His mother had been taught by a Conservative rabbi before her conversion, so the religion she was taught was not valid, so her conversion was void, so Joel was not Jewish. That's not at all funny, is it?
His book is well worth reading.
As always, in loving memory of Shira Palmer-Sherman, z'l.
Joanne Palmer works for United Synagogue, where she edits CJ: Voices of Conservative/Masorti Judaism.
