OCTY Bowl-a-thon

Saturday, January 29

6:00-8:30 PM

Oakwood Lanes

Washington, NJ

The event includes 2 hours of bowling and a pizza dinner.  If you have children that are age eligible (8th grade-12th grade) that would like to attend, please have them RSVP no later than Jan. 22 either by sending an email to Mitch Blutfield, or by responding through the OCTY group on Facebook
The event will cost roughly $15 per person.  Also, if your child/children do have Facebook and are not connected to the group, we encourage them to join in order to recieve the latest OCTY updates and event invites.

In addition, this event will be a bowl-a-thon to help support the Flemington Food Pantry, and we are asking all Or Chadash members for their help by making a pledge per pin for the average individual score of the group that attends this event.  For example, if you pledge 20 cents a pin, and the average score for the group is 100 pins, then your contribution would be $20.  Alternatively, you can donate a flat amount.  If you are interested please email Mitch Blutfield.

Rabbi's Message

Dear Members of Or Chadash,

The New Year is typically a time to rejoice in the renewal of the calendar year...a time when our culture goads us to resolve to commit ourselves to the best that our abilities can attain.  Spirited revelry aside, it is a time when we are hopeful that we will succeed in attaining the lofty goals to which we aspire.

This New Year has been met with a sobering measure of sorrow.  The very sad death of a dear friend of the Jewish world - Debbie Friedman - has added a mournful tune to every Jewish gathering.  Tributes, eulogies, essays and, in the manner of Moses's brother Aaron upon learning of the death of his sons, silence.  No words can capture the emotions of the loss of a very real friend who has been an inspiration to us, to our communities and, perhaps, even us us as individuals.

One day earlier another tragedy struck the Jewish world and the American people as an assassin took the lives of six innocent members of the Arizona community, attempting to assassinate Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, as well.

Our nation is in shock as the details of this tragedy emerge. While there will always be differences of opinion in the politics of how our nation should be governed, violence is not part of that debate.  We all mourn these deaths and pray for the well-being of those who were injured this weekend in Tucson.

As a community we will not be uniting this week - as Or Chadash has graciously accepted an invitation to join with Woodlands Community Temple, a fellow Reform Congregation in Greenburgh, NY where members of our community will be joining with jews from the NY area and from across the country in a special musical program.  I encourage you to join me there for what will certainly be a very special evening.

The following week - January 21 - I hope you will join with me as we pay special tribute to Debbie Friedman and to the citizens of Arizona who deeply need our support. Click here for more information from the URJ about Debbie.  Click here to see the funeral service for Debbie streamed live on Tuesday, January 11 at 2:00 PM EST.  It will be archived so you can also watch it later.

I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year and pray that the coming days will be brighter than the first weeks of our New Year.  There are many exciting programs happening here at OC, and I encourage you to find one that will uplift, inspire and encourage you to make 2011 a great year for you.

Shalom,

Rabbi Joseph M. Forman

PJ Library Program

What is PJ Library?

PJ Library Logo

The PJ Library program is a non-profit, community enriching program that supports Jewish culture to grow within families' own homes.  Founded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, and now supported by our Bridgewater Community, this program is open to all children ages 0 to 7.   Families receive free monthly mailings of books and music focusing on growing love of Judiasm and faith to God with creative educational materials.. Together families can share in teaching pride and commitment to Jewish living to our children.

Our eager, growing Bridgewater PJ Library Community also hosts early education activities and events to strengthen friendships in a purposeful and engaging environment. We welcome any and all ideas for exciting age-appropriate field trips, singers, local visitors, authors, and holiday celebrations.
