| Rabbi's Message | | |
Dear Members of Or Chadash,
The New Year is typically a time to rejoice in the renewal of the calendar year...a time when our culture goads us to resolve to commit ourselves to the best that our abilities can attain. Spirited revelry aside, it is a time when we are hopeful that we will succeed in attaining the lofty goals to which we aspire.
This New Year has been met with a sobering measure of sorrow. The very sad death of a dear friend of the Jewish world - Debbie Friedman - has added a mournful tune to every Jewish gathering. Tributes, eulogies, essays and, in the manner of Moses's brother Aaron upon learning of the death of his sons, silence. No words can capture the emotions of the loss of a very real friend who has been an inspiration to us, to our communities and, perhaps, even us us as individuals.
One day earlier another tragedy struck the Jewish world and the American people as an assassin took the lives of six innocent members of the Arizona community, attempting to assassinate Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, as well.
Our nation is in shock as the details of this tragedy emerge. While there will always be differences of opinion in the politics of how our nation should be governed, violence is not part of that debate. We all mourn these deaths and pray for the well-being of those who were injured this weekend in Tucson.
As a community we will not be uniting this week - as Or Chadash has graciously accepted an invitation to join with Woodlands Community Temple, a fellow Reform Congregation in Greenburgh, NY where members of our community will be joining with jews from the NY area and from across the country in a special musical program. I encourage you to join me there for what will certainly be a very special evening.
The following week - January 21 - I hope you will join with me as we pay special tribute to Debbie Friedman and to the citizens of Arizona who deeply need our support. Click here for more information from the URJ about Debbie. Click here to see the funeral service for Debbie streamed live on Tuesday, January 11 at 2:00 PM EST. It will be archived so you can also watch it later.
I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year and pray that the coming days will be brighter than the first weeks of our New Year. There are many exciting programs happening here at OC, and I encourage you to find one that will uplift, inspire and encourage you to make 2011 a great year for you.
Shalom,
Rabbi Joseph M. Forman

Families receive free monthly mailings of books and music focusing on growing love of Judiasm and faith to God with creative educational materials..
