Mazel tov or mazal tov (Hebrew/Yiddish: מזל טוב, Hebrew: mazal tov; Yiddish: mazel tov; lit. "good luck [has occurred]"). The phrase is used to express "congratulations" for a happy and significant occasion or event.

Blessings of Skinned Knees, B Minuses and Podcasts
| | As a teacher or friend, parent or grandparent, coach or congregant, we are sometimes in the company of children. We always try to make the right "adult" decisions for the best interest of the kids. Resources for advice can be endless. And just when you think you have it all figured it out, children change, needs change, and new situations develop. And then you feel you are back to the drawing board, without a road map.
I felt very differently when I read Dr. Wendy Mogel's The Blessings of a Skinned Knee, about eight years ago. I remember having the urge to highlight paragraphs and place post-its throughout her book, so that I could reference key passages again and again. Dr. Mogel has a common sense approach to parenting and children that integrates religious tradition -- in her case Judaism-- while providing the tools and guidelines to make healthy choices. Her book talks about building strength and character, not strength of grades and achievement.
I was delighted to learn in Lisa Belkin's Motherlode blog, on October 12, 2010, of Dr. Mogel's "Blessings" sequel. Lisa Belkin writes:
"Little kids, little problems," the Russian version of the proverb says.
In Italian, it's "Little children, headache; big children, heartache."
And in Yiddish: "Small children disturb your sleep, big children disturb your life."
In her new book "The Blessing of a B Minus: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Resilient Teenagers," psychologist Wendy Mogel acknowledges that parents have more reason to worry as their children grow:
The main difference between raising small children and teenagers is the danger involved, both perceived and real. There's a difference between teaching your child to ride a two-wheeler and teaching her to drive a car. Between worrying that she will eat too much sugar at a birthday party and fearing that she might take Ecstasy at a rave. Between your disappointment that he wasn't placed in the top second-grade reading group and worrying that he won't make it into college.
But, she warns, the fact that the dangers are scarier does not change the fact that facing them down is what allows a teen to become a healthy adult. Mogel's first book, "Blessings of a Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Self-Reliant Children," sent the message that bumps and bruises (both the literal and the metaphorical kinds) are part of how children learn to be pick themselves up and move on. In this new book, her goal is to assure us that everything alarming about older children - their lack of motivation, their bursts of anger or surliness, their tendency to treat us like an A.T.M., their recklessness, their rudeness - are exactly the things they must do in order to become responsible, resilient adults.
The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) recently began including podcasts (a recording) on its website and I am delighted to share with you that Dr. Wendy Mogel is the featured author on two of these podcasts. You might enjoy listening to Wendy Mogel. And maybe you will want to pick up a copy of one of her books at the library. I'd certainly welcome the opportunity to get together to chat about our many blessings, young and old.

Interfaith Program and 100 lbs of apples:
OC and Islamic Center of Hunterdon County October 17, 2010

 | | Click on the picture above to be taken to the video. |
On Sunday, October 17, our 4th, 5th and 6th grade Religious School students joined students from the Islamic Center of Hunterdon County for a joint program of learning, experiencing and sharing. Working in small groups the students engaged in a "treasure hunt" around our
synagogue to introduce our friends to the synagogue and some of the objects it contains. The students also learned about some of the connections between Judaism and Islam. After a pizza and brownies lunch, we traveled to Melick's Cider Mill where we picked apples. Over 100 pounds of apples were donated to a most appreciative Flemington Food Pantry.

| Teaching Assistants | | |

On Sunday mornings we are blessed to have the energy and enthusiasm of twelve amazing teenagers assisting our faculty and students. In addition to their classroom activities, our Teaching Assistants (TAs) conduct Prayer Prep with our 6th and 7th graders, and provide general administrative support to Or Chadash. In order to become a Teaching Assistant a student must be enrolled in our 8th-10th grade program, or have become a Confirmand.
We appreciate ALL these students do to help our Or Chadash community. Thanks to them, and their families for making the Sunday morning commitment. It is very much appreciated. | Bat Mitzvah - Brianna Lifshitz | | Brianna Lifshitz became a Bat Mitzvah on October 23. She is the daughter of Edward and Cheryl Lifshitz. Brianna is in the eighth grade at Clinton Township Middle School, where her favorite subjects are language arts and science. Some of the things that Brianna loves to do include playing sports such as softball, tennis, and basketball; reading, writing, singing, and hanging out with friends. In the winter, Brianna also enjoys skiing in Vermont. Brianna's Mitzvah project was helping out at a farm for a program called Grow-A-Row. During these hours, Brianna helped pick food for those who are hungry. Moreover, since the age of eight, Brianna has asked for donations to charities instead of birthday gifts. Brianna's Torah portion is Vayeira. This section comes from the book of Genesis, and talks about the meaning of loyalty to God. Brianna is very excited to celebrate her becoming a Bat Mitzvah with her friends and family.
