The Hemi Lighted Forest of Hope
A Brighter Place for Children who have been impacted by Radical Brain Surgery
Imagine over 65,000 multi-colored lights, radiantly illuminating 421 live evergreen trees, with a backdrop of the great Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. Now imagine that each one of these trees represents a child who has endured an unimaginably radical brain surgery, to combat unstoppable epilepsy. This is the vision of "The Hemi Lighted Forest of Hope", and just as each tree shines brightly, so does the hope of the children that it represents.

All of these children have had a hemispherectomy, a brain surgery that provides relief from intractable epilepsy. In this radical surgery, half the brain is removed or disconnected to stop damaging and life-threatening forms of epilepsy. Of the 50 Million people in the world, who struggle with epilepsy, these children are, by far, the worst of the worst cases.

"We think of these kids and the struggles that they have to meet every day. This is just one way that we can show support to each and every one of them," Kelley said. Any funds raised from this project will go to The Hemispherectomy Foundation to help these children.
"It makes you realize that you can make a difference in your community, and you can make a difference in communities across the United States and around the world", Kelley said of the project. "You think out of the hat a little bit and you make it happen. Nothing is impossible. Nothing."

Mark your calendars NOW for the 2011 Hemispherectomy Foundation Conference and Family Reunion. You don't want to miss the 2011 conference and family reunion in sunny southern California at the Disneyland Paradise Pier Resort. http://disneyland.disney.go.com/hotels/paradise-pier-hotel/

The 2011 Conference promises to be a well-balanced mix of informative speakers, educational topics, and information geared specifically for families who have been impacted by Hemispherectomy Brain Surgery. In a relaxed, family atmosphere, among other families just like yours, you will be able to learn from others who have walked in your shoes. You will hear from doctors, experts, and scientists who are leaders in the fields that impact your child. Most importantly, you will meet new friends and see old friends who will walk the journey with you.

Make this trip part of a family summer vacation, or come exclusively for the event, but don't miss it. This is also a great chance to schedule appointments at nearby hospitals where your child may have had surgery. Before or after the conference is an ideal time to schedule those yearly follow-up appointments. You may even see your favorite doctor at the conference.
Everyone is invited. It doesn't matter whether you are from the East Coast, West Coast, somewhere in-between, or on the other side of the world, we want you in California in 2011. The Hemispherectomy Foundation Team is putting together an affordable package so that everyone can make it. And as always, The Hemispherectomy Foundation will be offering some financial aid for those who want to come, but just can't fit it into their budget without a little help.
So Block-Out those calendars now! And watch The Hemispherectomy Foundation website for more details throughout the year. We can't wait to see you on July 7th, 8th, and 9th for The 2011 Hemispherectomy Foundation Conference and Family Reunion !

The Hemispherectomy Foundation Medical Research Awards Program
· It is estimated that up to 50,000 deaths occur annually in the U.S. from status epilepticus (prolonged seizures), Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), and other seizure-related causes. · Epilepsy impacts over 3 million Americans (more than Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, and Parkinson's disease combined). · Historically, epilepsy research has been under-funded. Federal dollars spent on research pale in comparison to those spent on other diseases, many of which affect fewer people than epilepsy.

The Hemispherectomy Foundation is dedicated to championing the cause of Medical Research, especially in areas that directly impact the families that we support...those impacted by Hemispherectomy brain surgery, where one-half of their brain is removed or disconnected to control epileptic seizures. With this in mind, The Hemispherectomy Foundation is excited to announce the formation of The Hemispherectomy Foundation Medical Research Awards. These Awards will be given annually to outstanding researchers who have shown a commitment to conducting medical research that is significant to the Hemispherectomy Community and those families that we serve. The Awards will be given to researchers in areas including, but not limited to:
* Physical Rehabilitation of the Hemiparetic Hand, Arm, Leg, Foot
* Gait and Walking Rehabilitation * Cognitive Rehabilitation * Hemimegalencephaly Research * Cortical Dysplasia Research * Research into Rasmussen's Encephalitis * Pediatric Stroke Research * Sturge-Weber Syndrome Research |
