St. Patrick's Day

Fun Facts

 St. Patrick's Day Origins

~St. Patrick's Day began as a religious holiday to honor St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century.

~The first parade for the holiday occurred in New York City on March 17, 1762. It featured Irish soldiers who served in the English military.

~In 1948, President Harry S. Truman attended the parade. In 1995, Congress proclaimed March to be Irish-American Heritage Month.

Irish in America

~36.5 million U.S. residents claimed Irish ancestry in 2007, more than eight times the 4 million-plus population of Ireland itself. The only ancestry reported more often was German.

~Massachusetts residents were twice as likely to claim Irish ancestry as the nation overall, with a rate of 24 percent compared with 12 percent.

Those with Irish heritage were more likely to have higher household income, own their own homes and earn educational degrees. Specifically:

~32 percent of Irish Americans older than 24 held at least a bachelor's degree and 92 percent held at least a high school diploma, compared with 28 percent and 85 percent for the entire U.S.

~Households headed by an Irish-American received a median income of $56,966 in 2007 compared with $50,740 for all households.

~72 percent of those Irish-headed homes were owned, compared with 67 percent for all households. The remainder rented.

Greetings!

Welcome to the March issue of the Earth Magic® Newsletter and thanks for your support and your blessings! This month on the 20th we celebrate the advent of Ostara (also spelled Oestre or Eastre), the Teutonic goddess of dawn and spring. According to the Celtic Wheel of the Year, March 20 is actually the mid-point! Tell that to those folks in parts of the country whereSteven New Photo the temperatures are at the lower end of the thermometer!

Here in the northern hemisphere the season changing reminds us of fertility, rebirth, and renewal. I find myself this past week or two feeling an increasing amount of energy, doing more physical activites such as cleaning out the garage, organizing my office, fixing things around the house that need repair, and jogging on the beach more often than the previous months.

Hmm. Spring housecleaning. What will you be giving away, recycling and throwing out? Are there some habits and beliefs that need to be released to make room for other creative expressions? It's also a time to start planting the garden, both literally and figuratively. What seeds of ideas are you planting now so that they will gestate and blossom in the coming weeks and months? Are you weeding your garden so there will be more space and nutrients for those seeds you've planted will grow?

Enough of the metaphors. Reminds me of Chance the gardener in the movie Being There. You get the point.

Hope to see you at one of my many upcoming events!

Love & Blessings,

Writing and Distractions
By Dr. Steven Farmer

One of my favorite sayings as a writer is "the tyranny of the blank page" and for the earlier part of this day it proved to be true. I'm in Atlanta doing some workshops and private sessions at this incredible new age/metaphysical bookstore called Phoenix and Dragon, while Jesseca is attending a six- day intensive from 9AM to 10PM every day on the Enneagram. The way my schedule worked out is that after doing the first workshop and some private sessions, I'd have one full day set aside for writing. I have a couple of blogs, an article and three book projects in various stages of development.

So today is that day! I have a whole day in front of me. So I started to write a blog I'd been working on. It was going extremely slow. The creative juices weren't flowing at full speed. It took four hours to come up with three paragraphs. Good ones, but still, only three when I'm going for twice as many at least. Besides, it's not a matter of paragraphs but writing what you want to communicate. And it has to have heart and be done in a way that others can relate to. Yet in spite of all this, it's amazing how many things I can think of doing other than writing when I'm having trouble coming up with the perfect way to say what I want to say.

For instance, first thing this morning I discovered when I sat down at the computer ready to roll that I was really lagging on my emails, both personal and professional ones. So of course, I had to take care of that. There were several good articles that others had referred me to that I had to read. And I'm sure you can understand how important it is to keep up with current events, what with all the changes going on in the world all the time. Then, of course, there's Facebook; have to see what everyone is posting.

Yet, in all that, I still feel compelled to write.

After a few hours, instead of stewing in word hell, I decided to take a walk. Went around the perimeter of the hotel we're in. Looked at the stars, listened to the geese occasionally still honking. Went back inside.

Took a few breaths, sat down, focused in, and the words started showing up on the pages. Then sentences. I spent quite a bit of time tweaking this fairly complex piece on sacrifices and choices (stay tuned). Didn't finish it, but I have the first three paragraphs.    Sometimes it's hard to remember that this is the creative process, one that is nurtured by focused attention and listening to that inner voice, then translating it into intelligible and (hopefully) meaningful communication. I also remembered sometimes the words and sentences sometimes come quickly and sometimes slowly, that every piece has its own rhythm and it takes patience and persistence to join that rhythm. It takes patience and persistence to wait until the words come together. Like Buddha said, "Don't just do something; sit there."

Why Does Anyone Write?

Earlier today a friend of mine, Betsy, posted a question on Facebook and got a number of responses. The question was: "A question for writers:  Other than getting paid for it, why do you write? What is your "other" pay-off?"

Good question and it generated some great responses. Among them:

♣    I write to get it out of my brain

♣    Writing is one of the ways I make the world around me more understandable

♣    I write because I want to provide something for people to enjoy

♣    I can't NOT write! Something takes over and I HAVE to do it

♣    I do this because otherwise I would have to go out and get a 'real job'!

♣    It's in my blood, in my breath. Every part of me is drawn to writing, to taking pen to paper and letting the words flow.

The question really worked me. About halfway through the day I returned to Betsy's string of comments and added my own: 1) Like **** said, "I cannot NOT write." 2) Words are like a paintbrush. This is my art. 3) It releases whatever is in my head and onto the computer/paper. 4) I LOVE WORDS!

I think that's the bottom line as to why anyone writes. Love. Love writing.

If you feel called to write, or for that matter to engage in any expressive creative process, go for it. It requires you to listen closely to your imagination, to the voice and images inside you. You become a translator of that rich internal human experience that you are privy to by your very identity. Spirit becomes conscious of you as you become conscious of Spirit in the process of creation.

    It is written!

Dear Doc,

On 9th April, 2010,  Zia, my 16.5 year old staffordshire bull terrier passed away.  We were almost inseparable for her life and we shared the closest friendship, feeling of unconditional love and unspoken compassion I have ever experienced.   It was like being in nature when we were together.  She was a complete blessing to my life and the kindest most loyal friend.   She also made so many others smile everyday with her gentle and quirky ways.

I understood that we would have to part ways one day, and she suffered well thru most of her illness (cancer) for the last three years, still walking everyday, swimming and loving life.  The last months were very tough for us as she had a large tumor in her month and we had to use stronger medications and handfeed with alot of additional difficulties.

My reason for writing is that I have so much pain for the fact that I had to have her euthanized.  I was praying so deeply for a natural non-assisted passing.  She was on my lap, I engaged in many spiritual practices during this time.  I know I have to let go of this situation, but I still feel deeply tormented by this decision I made as her care giver.   I have grieved and grieved and prayed and prayed.   I have some acceptance to this situation, but I still feel unresolved with myself.  I miss her terribly.

I know she will be looked after and free.  Is there a way I can get a message from her..... my only instinct is to trust and look into my own heart and I find our love there..... I am a little lost in my emotions.

Thank you so kindly.

Jodie

Jodie,

I'm very sorry for your loss. It's apparent you did everything you could do help with Zia's transition, including euthanizing her and thus relieving her of the pain that ravaged her body. I tuned in to see if there was anything from Zia. I actually "heard" her say thank you and saw her licking you on your leg. My sense was that whenever you feel that sensation on your leg, though very lightly, it's her giving you the message that she is okay.

Blessings to you with this loss. Allow yourself to grieve as much and as often as you need to, as doing so honors your love for this beautiful being!

Many Blessings,
Steven
