Greetings!
Greetings and welcome to the November 2010 issue of my newsletter. I've just finished up a tour in Florida. I was gratefully welcomed everywhere I went and had the opportunity to work with some wonderful people, both in workshops and privat e sessions. A special thanks to Margaret, Pam, Dawn, and Tessia at The Crystal Garden and Cheri and Bruce at Aquarian Dreams, who sponsored the events and the private sessions. To cap things off I had a great visit to Panther Ridge, where there I met several rescued big cats.
And I'm very happy and excited to announce that the new EARTH MAGIC ORACLE CARDS are now available! And here we go into the waning light, typically marked by the festivities from October 31 through November 2, all serving in some way to remind us of the daylight becoming shorter and the night longer. It's especially a time of honoring our ancestors and these celebrations are the foundation for our present day Halloween, All Saint's Day, All Soul's Day, and El Dia De Los Meurtos (Day of the Dead). Where are the Ancestors?
We in our "civilized" western culture pay little or no attention to our ancestors, those of our family lineage that are in spirit world. Not just about mom and dad but about the many generations that have come before, starting with mom and dad but extending way back into the depths of our history here on the planet. In fact we think about our dead relatives as-well, dead relatives. Or deceased loved ones (although your pet who has taken the trail back home could also qualify as a deceased loved one).
When you think about it, if your parents had two parents, and they had two parents, and they had two parents . . .well, you get the picture. Imagine an upside down pyramid, with you at the bottom. If the reverse pyramid were stacked with all of your ancestors, there would be well over 150 layers. The number of contributors to your present existence rises exponentially the further you go back. Not being a math wizard, I can only speculate as to how many other human beings have contributed to your DNA and your soul's destiny.
What if we started revising our thinking and our terminology, and acknowledged that grandpa Ted and great-grandmother Mary are not only deceased relatives, but also ancestors? What would that really mean if we accepted that way of viewing them once they have passed?
It would cause us to look at this phenomenon in a completely different way, closer to how many indigenous and most eastern religions and spiritual practices include some version of reverence and honoring of the lineage. In many of these practices, rituals are performed frequently that honor the ancestors in some fashion. In some cultures they are considered close to the Creator, however in our Judeo-Christian tradition this would be considered blasphemy to even consider this.
If you have even an inkling of a belief that a person's soul goes on after their physical body has ceased functioning, then it can't be much of a stretch to imagine that our deceased loved ones are just a little bit wiser and a little bit closer to the Creator and can therefore rightfully be called ancestors.
I believe that our ancestors, whether one generation or several generations ago, can help us with guidance and healing. One such personal experience that took place nearly twenty years ago was with my mother's spirit about three months after she had passed. I was visiting some friends, Gary and Maria, in Portland, Oregon, and Maria offered to do a psychic reading with me. 
Turned out to be a very powerful reading. Maria zeroed in on some very painful childhood experiences with my mother. After the hour or so I was in shock, numb from the freshly awakened memories, deeply touched by the compassion that Maria felt for me during the reading as she plumbed the depths of my psyche and unearthed the feelings that had remained buried for such a long time.
I couldn't even speak. I left there and drove just outside the city to a campground where I had planned to spend the night. I silently prepared the campground, then sat at the picnic table and started a letter to my mother, writing furiously, tears trickling down my cheeks as the grief that had been stowed away for so many years began to press forward from my heart and mind.
Then, I felt a presence. My breathing quickened. I felt a light touch on my shoulder, yet knew that it couldn't be anyone. Then I distinctly heard my mother's voice, saying, "Ahh! Now I see who you are! I see you!" Instantly I knew that her spirit was with me. Although she never did "get" me (I was kind of a weird, introverted kid), now that she had crossed over, she now understood who I was and what I was about.
I broke into deep, breathless sobbing at that revelation, yet feeling strangely comforted at the same time that she could "see" me. All because she, as an ancestor, came to me at a time of need. It was a relief to know that she was with me even though in spirit world, and has come to me a few times since, with a little more healing each time.
This is but one example of the many ways our ancestors can contribute to our lives. Like many of the spirit beings we come to know, they want to help us. One of the major advantages we have by establishing relationships with them is that they have at one time existed as physical human beings and experienced all the joys and suffering that came with the territory. Therefore, as ancestors, they have the greatest of compassion and empathy for what it's like to have existed in physical form here on Earth.

Dear Doc,
Last night I had a dream, which I would like you to interpret for me.  I was at my grandparent's farm near their barn. It was muddy and I was in the corrals. All of a sudden a head popped out of the ground. At first, I could not tell what this creature was and then a colt was pushed out of the mud. Soon after, his parents came to the surface as well and joined the baby. I was so excited about the horses that I ran to get my husband. He came to take a look and another family of three pushed through the mud; six horses in all. It was like they were birthed into the world through the mud. I have had other dreams where things/creatures were "born" and came up through the ground and a few nights ago I had a dream where I dropped through the ground and went to the Lower World and brought back a human baby to the Middle World, so I believe the interpretation of the mud/soil/ground in my dreams is key for me. I would appreciate your help and thanks so much. Joni
Dear Joni,Great dream. Not sure of the significance of your grandparent's farm as this is a highly personal symbol. The horses birthing from the ground in one sense are reminding you to stay close to the Earth, to tend to it as a true steward. Horse amongst other meanings is about freedom, so it's also about you freeing yourself to do the work you need to do, and in doing so to get your inspiration from the natural world. Other dreams about creatures being born from the Earth imply something similar. The baby your brought back from the Lower World sounds very much like a soul retrieval, an aspect of your soul that is now with you! Also good idea, if you're not already (though I suspect you are) would be to pursue further shamanic training. Sounds like you're a woman of the Earth and you have something to "birth!"
