An exhibit of Kropp's photography is now on display in the Library's Quiet Reading Room through March 2. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours.

Great Books Discussion
Second Tuesday of the month
7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Registration begins 2 weeks prior to each session

Great Books discussions explore, interpret and evaluate a challenging work through the method of Shared Inquiry. Shared Inquiry is a discussion process through which a group searches for answers to questions raised by a work that they they have all read. A discussion leader directs and guides the group by asking interpretive questions that reflect genuine doubt about the text. Participants are asked to support their ideas and consider proposed interpretations.

Smartphones and tablets are becoming increasingly commonplace. Resident gadget guru Mike Oetting will demonstrate some of the most interesting apps on the market for these devices, including QR code readers, news aggregators, note clipping services, weather apps and many more. If you're considering buying a mobile device, you'll get a better idea of what they can offer; if you already have one, bring it to show others your favorite apps. Demystifying eBook Downloads

Did you know that your Hinsdale library card gives you free access to a growing collection of thousands of eBooks? Reference Librarians Mike Oetting and Emily Borsa will strip away the technical mumbo-jumbo and tell you exactly what you need to know to check out and load eBooks onto your device. Whether you've got an iPad, Android tablet, Kindle or Nook eReader, you'll be up to speed before you know it. In addition to the presentation and a demo, there will be plenty of time for you to ask questions and to share your eBook experiences with others. Ernest Hemingway Exhibit Coming to the Library

In celebration of 2012's Big Read book, The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, the Hinsdale Public Library will be home to a special exhibit, Picturing Hemingway: A Writer in His Time during March and April. The exhibit, located on the upper floor, will be open to all visitors during regular library hours. The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Hinsdale and Lisle Public Libraries.

 

The exhibit is on loan from the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park and consists of sixteen panels featuring 70 historic photos of Hemingway and his life which were gathered from both public and private collections. The exhibit has traveled to many schools and libraries nationally and abroad since its debut in Oak Park in 1999.

 

Picturing Hemingway: A Writer in his Time was organized by the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., in collaboration with The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park.

 

The Big Read 2012:

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

The Big Read is celebrating its eighth season this spring with Paula McLain's bestseller, The Paris Wife, with book discussions, programs and a visit from the author. The Big Read is a collaborative project of 11 area libraries with the goal of building community by promoting reading. 

The Big ReadThe Paris Wife is a deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, which captures a remarkable period of time - Paris in the 1920s - and the extraordinary love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley Richardson.

Pick up a brochure with program information at any of the participating libraries. 

iCraft: Teen Craft Night

Are you crafty? Are you looking for a place to knit, crochet, embroider, scrapbook or WHATEVER without having your little sibling getting in your way or your parents looking over your shoulder? A practice test is crucial to ward off those Test Day jitters and to predict how you might score on the "real thing." Don't be surprised! Come to the Library and experience firsthand what Test Day will be like. A certified representative from the library will provide a proctored practice test and return scores with analyzed results. Give yourself every opportunity of scoring success by enrolling in this program! 

Babysitters' Training Course

Saturday, February 18, 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Sunday, February 19, 1:15 p.m.-4:45 p.m.

Please sign up only if you are able to attend both sessions.

 

This is an 8-hour babysitting training course for pre-teens and teens taught by a certified teacher. Students will participate in teacher-led and small group discussions, hands-on activities, and practical experiences to gain the skills needed to have a successful and fulfilling time caring for children. A student reference book and first aid kit are included. Lunch will be provided on Saturday, and a snack will be provided on Sunday. Please bring a beverage of your choice and an infant-sized doll to each class. For those entering grade 6 and up. Limit 20. Registration begins February 4.  

Kids Read 2012:

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

Kids Read 2012The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick has been selected as the title for the second annual Kids Read community reading program. Kids Read was developed to run in conjunction with The Big Read. Programs will be planned for March 2012. For now, pick up a copy of this Caldecott Award winning novel about twelve-year-old Hugo, an orphan living and repairing clocks within the walls of a Paris train station in 1931, who meets a mysterious toyseller and his goddaughter, which jeopardizes his undercover life and his biggest secret.

 

Paris Treats: Family & Food

Thursday, March 8

Grades 3-5 with parent

Join Chef Lisa Williams as she takes you on a trip through the process of making crepes.

Chef Williams will demonstrate how to make the batter and cook the crepes, with help from the audience.

Then everyone will have a chance to make whipped cream and stuff the crepes with tasty fillings. Yum! Chef Williams will also discuss how to adapt to recipes to an allergen-free lifestyle. Limit 15 families. Registration begins February 23.

Pet Assisted LearningSaturday, February 11

Kindergarten through fourth grade

 

The Hinsdale Humane Society's R.E.A.D. Therapy Program works with children to help foster a love of reading. Students will meet at the Library with a trained therapy dog and its handler for 15-minutes reading sessions to share stories and practice reading skills. Registration begins two weeks prior to each session. Registration will be taken in 15-minute increments until the sessions are full.

Teacher Tales

Students from Hinsdale Central will be matched with first through fourth graders for reading sessions. Younger buddies will share stories and practice reading with their HCHS buddy, then work on a craft project together. Refreshments will be served. Limit 10. Register for the full four-week session beginning February 12.
