NATIONAL NIGHT OUT-Do you Know Your Neighbors?

Getting to know your neighbors is one of the keys to a safer neighborhood.nno

For the last 20 years Holland has participated in a national event that focuses on showing cooperation among residents and the police to fight crime and improve neighborhoods.  This effort is called "National Night Out".  We host an annual "Going Away Party for Crime at Drugs" at Kollen Park with this year's event taking place August 1, 2011.  This year we are expanding to a two night celebration.  The next night, August 2, 2011, in Holland, and throughout the nation residents are encouraged to demonstrate their committment to their neighborhoods by turning on porch lights from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and getting outside to mingle with their neighbors.   Some residents might host block parties during this time, others potlucks, cookouts, ice cream socials, or just get together informally on each other's porches.

Getting to know who lives in your neighborhood is a good first step in both preventing crime and building community.

A committee has been formed to organize this year's event.  We are looking for volunteers, sponsors and especially residents who will make the committment to getting out with their neighbors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on August 2nd.    If you'd like to get involved please contact Sue Harder at 355-3139 or s.harder@cityofholland.com.  We are registering Holland Neighborhoods and we'd love to include yours.
