City of Holland's New Event Widget

What's a Widget?  A widget is an application that can be downloaded onto your computer that will keep you up on all of the things going on in Holland throughout the year.

Where can I download it? You can quickly and easily download at this site. Just click on the photo of the Events Widget right on the homepage.

Why would I install the Event Widget? Are you looking for something to do with the family this weekend? Trying to figure out what to do on a great date night? Have friends in town and want to show them something exciting happening in Holland? Feel like hearing some music but not sure where to go? Just looking for something to do? Well, that's why you'd install the events widget!

Have more questions about the Event Widget such as, "How can I add my events to the widget" or "Is the widget a mobile app. yet?"  You can find the answers to these questions and more here

Man Raking Leaves
Fall Leaf Pickup
Beginning the weekend of October 9, 2010, Holland City residents will be allowed to rake leaves into the street gutters or to the shoulders of roads for pickup by City crews.

ONLY LEAVES will be picked up during this collection.  To the extent weather permits, vacuum collectors are used in the leaf pickup program, and this equipment will not handle branches, grass clippings or other yard debris.

If you need to dispose of yard debris other than leaves, Project Pride coupons are available at City Hall in the Department of Community Neighborhood Services.

Please contact the City of Holland Street Dept. at 928-2400 for questions regarding this program.

Asbestos:  Should I Be Concerned?
excerpts from a brochure published by the MSHDA Asbestos Program

What is asbestos?  "Asbestos is a fiber found in rocks.  There are several kinds of asbestos.  Asbestos is fire resistant and not easily destroyed."

Is asbestos dangerous?  "It has now been proven that asbestos is associated with several diseases that can lead to death.  In some products, the asbestos can break into small fibers that can float in the air and be inhaled into the lungs.  If inhaled, asbestos fibers can become lodged in the lungs.  Then, after many years, certain types of cancer can develop.  Not all people exposed to asbestos have health problems that are related to asbestos."

Where can asbestos be found in a building or home?  "Some of the places where asbestos is found are in wall coverings, fire proofing, roofing material, transite siding and electrical appliances such as a toaster or hair dryer."  Here's a helpful document that shows many more places asbestos is found.

Are all products containing asbestos considered a health risk? "A material is only a health risk when asbestos fibers are released from the material and become airborne.  Asbestos materials that can be easily crumbled by hand have the greatest potential of releasing asbestos."

How do I know if my building/home contains asbestos?  "The manufacturer of a product will know whether their product contains asbestos.  In addition, professionals in the asbestos abatement field will have a general idea of products that contain asbestos.  A local environmental laboratory will also be able to test a sample of a material to see if it contains asbestos."
