Celebrating Neighborhood Spirit with Block Parties
May is a great time to start thinking towards planning your summer block party since you'll want at least a month to plan. During this year's National Night Out, held August 2nd, we will be presenting an award for the Best Block Party and Most Improved Block, so keep this in mind as you plan. In case you are short on creative ideas, here are 10 fun suggestions for activities at your party: - Instead of holding an evening event, have a pancake breakfast block party.
- Fill your flowerbeds with a plant swap. Families could bring divided plants from their own gardens to share with neighbors.
- Have a "men's bake-off" with a required ingredient, and a panel of judges decides the winner.
- Hold a talent show with members of your block
- Show an outdoor movie in a neighbor's yard once the sun goes down.
- Try a water balloon fight, just make sure to pick up the pieces.
- Set up a treasure hunt or scavenger hunt for the kids.
- Do face-painting or sidewalk chalk.
- Rent a bouncy bounce.
- Ask everyone to include where they're originally from when they RSVP, then display a map with names pinned to their hometowns at the
party.
You can find all of the information you'll need to plan a successful
block party in the City of Holland's Neighborhood Block Party Guide. For assistance with your block party, please contact Janie Briones at 355-3127 or j.briones@cityofholland.com
