Take a Moment

Power and powerlessness both lay at the heart of our ongoing cultural discussion of equality among the sexes. Too often we perceive this as a somewhat binary distinctionone group as the oppressor, the other as the oppressedand thus one genders power tends to be defined by another groups powerlessness. But there is much more to this story: both men and women experience power and powerlessness, and no single gender has a monopoly on oppression. Or, as Warren Farrell often points out, the weakness of men is the facade of strength, while the strength of women is the facade of weakness.

Most of us have had some experience with both our power and our powerlessness at some point in our lives, which has typically informed our own growth and behaviors in deeply personal ways. Take a moment to reflect on the times you've felt the most powerless, based solely on your gender. How did it feel? How did you cope? Did you end up surrendering your power willingly, or was it somehow taken from you? What has this experience done to shift your relationship with your own power?

"I sometimes wonder if Ken Wilber's work could be marketed as, "How to Cheatingly Make Yourself Sound Smart at Everything". But that's just the beauty of having good orienting generalisations (so long as they apply without obscuring essential details). You can hear two guys on TV engaged in a debate -- you've never seen either of them before -- and within a minute or two you've got a basic sense of their worldviews, and you can start to predict what they're gonna say next. And from an Integral perspective, even more valuable, you can spot what neither of them said...."

"'Letting go of holding back.' When first hearing this statement my thoughts flashed back to over 18 years ago to an expereince that put this saying into perspective for me. Most of my life has been this holding back...."what will others say hearing about my somewhat, stange altered experiences." But in the middle of the night, in a somewhat trance-like state, experencing powerful surges of energy running though my body, from lower chakras to my heart level, thoughts of death overwhelmed me. This was the beginning of my letting go...."
