Cutting Back Ornamental Grasses Ornamental grasses are wonderful additions and add enjoyment to every landscape. Most varieties are low maintenance, winter hardy for here in Central Illinois, and can provide three seasons of landscape interest. (Summer, Fall, Winter) However, to have ornamental grasses perform their best you should cut them back to about five inches above the ground in late February or early March. Note: ornamental grasses are not the same as prairie grasses and therefore should not be burned off. Since the grasses produce new growth from their base, cutting them back in late winter removes the dead foliage spikes. This will help promote plant development in early spring as well as spread seeds for the birds to eat. The process of cutting back ornamental grasses in late winter is an essential step to ensuring plant performance and enjoyment.
