In late spring, the 'Cleveland Select' ornamental pear begins an outstanding display of slightly pungent bright white semi-double flowers that make way for glossy green foliage. This medium sized tree makes an excellent ornamental or street tree that will grow well in almost any soil and is stronger (than Bradford pear), withstanding our winds and winter ice storms. This tree has outstanding fall color and is considered fruitless.  For more information click on the photo or call us at 309-662-8527

Now is the time to apply pre-emergent crabgrass control to your lawn.  The garden center carries Hi-Yield, Ferti-lome, and Espoma organic products.  Applications of preemergents help to prevent crabgrass, foxtail, goosegrass and other annual weedgrasses that establish themselves in turfgrass.  We carry preemergent with or without fertilizer.

Landscape Maintenance
Keeping it Green
Mulch Volcanoes Kill Treesmulch volcanoe
Nothing makes the landscape look fresh and new like a covering of shredded hardwood bark mulch.  Its rich dark brown coloring makes the new, green leaves and colorful flowers "pop". However, it is very important not to over mulch.  Mounding mulch around tree trunks and woody parts of shrubs will cause the bark to rot and tree or shrub to die. A couple of years ago I thought there was a contest to see who could get their mulch volcanoes the highest!  Ugh! Covering an emerging perennial plant with too much mulch may suffocate it. We recommend a 1 1/2" to 2" layer of mulch around trees,  shrubs and perennials.  We do not recommend to put hardwood bark around annual flowers- it gets too hot and robs nutrients from the upper inches of soil, leaving little for the new plantings.
Mulch will also help to insulate the soil in the summer, hold in moisture and reduce weeds.

If you have an adequate cover of mulch but just need a fresh look, fluff the mulch with a rake or cultivator. Underneath the faded top layer the mulch looks new.

April Showers bring
Rainwater Harvesting to
Bloomington-Normal rain water harvesting
Did you know that just 1 inch of rainfall on a 2,000 sq. ft. roof generates 1,250 gallons of potentially reusable water? Rainwater harvesting is an idea that has been around forever, but has recently gained popularity due to the trend of living a more green and sustainable lifestyle. The most used method of rainwater capturing is the rain barrel. This method is loved by some, but the unsightly and limited capacity rain barrels discourage many. The leading supplier of pond and water feature products, Aquascape, has developed a rain harvesting system that incorporates rainwater collection and storage with a Pondless® Waterfall or Fountainscape. The system allows for rainwater to flow directly from your gutter into an in-ground filtering basin, then into an underground storage area which can range in size from 500 gallons to 3,000 gallons or more. This storage area also works as a receptacle for a water feature positioned above it,  allowing water to recirculate from the storage area, through the water feature and back to the storage area. This recirculating not only acts as a water feature for your enjoyment, but allows for filtering and aeration of the water which prevents stagnation and bacteria.

There are numerous benefits to this system. The water features are a great addition to any landscape, offering the peaceful, aesthetic appeal of moving water. Moving water also has a natural ability to draw wildlife such as birds and butterflies. The Fountainscape option of this product lends itself to small spaces such as inside a front walk, where there always seems to be a downspout emptying onto the sidewalk. Besides the curb appeal benefits, this product has the potential for allowing the excess water not being used by the water feature to wash cars, top off pools  & hot tubs or water flowers. By storing this water (which falls on your roof free of charge) you are preventing that water from quickly rushing off your roof and into the storm sewers and overwhelming the streams. For more information about adding a rainwater harvesting or any other design element to your landscape, please visit our website at www.grieders.com.
