Aharon Barak at the lecternWe are pleased to announce that Professor Aharon Barak will deliver our Annual Lecture at 6pm on 4 June, on the subject of Rights and their Limits: The Role of Proportionality.

Aharon Barak served for 28 years in the Supreme Court of Israel, during which time he expanded the powers of the court and reshaped Israel as a constitutional democracy. He has been described by legal scholars as the 'world's greatest living jurist'.
 
 
Can International Courts Do Justice?
Report examining responses to post-conflict justice publishes

A report examining the effectiveness of international courts at delivering justice published last week, providing a critical analysis of the issues discussed by an international panel of academics, practitioners and legal experts in our workshop held on 29 January.

The report, entitled 'Can International Courts Do Justice?', covers recent controversies over ICC interventions in the Sudan and the DRC, and explores the difficulties of securing long-term objectives such as peace-building and reparation in order to secure justice for survivors of conflict and mass atrocity.

John Roemer at St Hugh's CollegeOn 29 April Professor John Romer of Yale University delivered a lecture on 'Equality in an Era of Responsiblity'.

The lecture opened a workshop which brought together academics and senior policymakers to debate these issues as part of our programme on The Social Contract Revisited.
