Second Sunday Family Eucharist

On the second Sunday of each month, St. George's celebrates a lively Family Eucharist for small children at 9:15 a.m. The music, readings and homily are all child-friendly, and the children learn about one of the central rituals of the church through an instructed Eucharist.

All children are welcome, regardless of church membership.

Greetings!

Fall has arrived, and now the St. George's calendar of activities is in full swing.

The Blessing of the Animals on October 7 remains one of our most popular services, but we also have several great musical events planned including SOMA's (Society of Music Arts) October 14 concert and our very own Elaine Bennett's song-by-request benefit on the evening of October 20 to support the Capital Campaign.

And while it's also the time of the harvest, St. George's remains mindful of those who do not always enjoy the bounty of enough food. Join us as we observe Bread of the World Sunday on the 21st and CROP Walk for Hunger Relief on the 28th.

See you in church -- and beyond!

RectorRector's Message

The Rev. Bernie Poppe, Rector
The Rev. Bernie Poppe,
Rector

The prophet Jeremiah said "Without a vision the people perish." It's a simple observation of a profound truth. People strive and yearn to join in God's creative energy. It must be a way of connecting with God. We see a field; we want to make a garden. We see a mess; we want to clean it up. We see an opportunity; we want to take it.

People want to be on the move and go places in our physical world, emotional world, and spiritual world. The baptismal service has a prayer that the person baptized be given an "inquiring and discerning heart" and we are always in pursuit of... something.

Throughout our history at St. George's, the congregation has met together occasionally for the purpose of dreaming a little and creating visions of what our church and our community might shape into. Our legacy is a strong commitment to lay leadership, progressive social action, both creative and traditional worship, and deep fellowship. Different times have different challenges and the vision that the community creates helps to meet those challenges, transcend them with God's help and move more confidently and effectively into a future that has meaning and purpose.

About seven years ago, the community of St. George's got together again and dreamed. We created a vision of an improved building that would be a resource to the community and open our doors to agencies and activities that reflected our values and spiritual hopes. Our main focus was on issues related to children, mental health and healing, cultural activities and social justice. These four core values have guided us through the years and shaped our ministry and response to God's call.

That process led us to a Capital Campaign and a refurbished building. We house many community groups, projects and agencies dedicated to the areas we also value. (The list is included below.) We even renamed our adjacent building The Resource Center to highlight our commitment. It's been exciting and fulfilling to watch this development in our church and to see our place in the overall Maplewood community.

It's time for us to dream again and create a new vision for our future.

There has been a lot of transition in our congregation and new members infuse a lot of new energy and creative ideas as well as hope and desires for their spiritual life and that of their families. It's our hope to gather this energy and commitment and give it a shape that we can work together to build.

St. Paul often referred to our spiritual lives as running "the race that is set before us". But unlike the races that only have one winner, all who enter this race win, as we are called forward and move into the future to the best of our ability.

The life and ministry of St. George's have always thrived on the mission and vision that emerges from the body of the faithful. In this coming year, be a part of the Visioning Process. Everyone has a voice to share and a dream to dream. Whether you've been here sixty years or just walked in the door, your voice and vision matter!

St. George's is home to:

  • The worshiping community of St. George's
  • Juvenile Bi-polar Research Foundation (raising funds for research)

St. George's Celebrates

Ten years ago this week, the Rev. Bernard W. Poppe stepped into the pulpit for the first time as the seventh Rector of St. George's.

Through the use of a special email list that includes everyone in the parish except Bernie, members of his flock hatched a plan to celebrate at a special coffee hour after services today. There were deviled eggs and carrot cake, two of his favorite treats, and Warden Cheryl Notari held back some of the deviled eggs to make sure they would still be available when Bernie arrived after greeting people at the main door of the church.

Early in the planning stages, the decision was made to let Bernie know that an observance was planned -- otherwise he might have been worried when the Rev. Canon Gregory A. Jacobs materialized in the pew.  Greg is Canon to the Ordinary, the number two official of the Diocese of Newark, and he read a letter of congratulations from Bishop Mark Beckwith, who was at a long-planned visit to another parish. Music Notes

My Dear Friends,

John Ayer,
Organist & Choirmaster

By the time you all receive this month's edition of Dragon Tales, we shall be in the midst of autumn, and the program life at St. George's will have already engulfed us in a myriad of activities, great and small. And the music department is merely a reflection of this.

As I'm sure most of you are aware, we have secured a quartet (SATB) of singers from Westminster Choir College in Princeton to serve as new section leaders in our adult choir. They were formally introduced to you in our Homecoming service on Sunday 16 September. Their names are Madeline Schmidt, Sarah McMahon, Lucas DeJesus and Chaequan Anderson. All of these young people exhibit a great aptitude for music, as well as friendliness and seriousness of purpose. If you happen to cross paths with one or more of these folks while at church, please welcome them and introduce yourself. Needless to say, I expect great things of them, musically, as the year progresses. But, don't forget - just because we have engaged four new people to help our sections does NOT mean we have to stop recruiting new choir members. We have plenty of room to accommodate many more singers (especially young ones!) into the choir. If you know of anyone who has an interest in singing, please have him or her contact me immediately. And we're not looking for Met Opera stars; we merely want to reach out to those folks who have a love of music and wish to contribute whatever talents they possess to support the music program at St. George's. So come one, come all!

Youth Trips, Service Projects Planned for Fall

Olivia Pope
Olivia Pope,
Youth Minister

After only three weeks of working here at St. George's, exciting things are beginning to move forward. My biggest project has been collaborating with the youth directors and advisors at St. Andrew and Holy Communion (SAHC) in South Orange and St. Stephen's in Millburn. I think it is truly wonderful to have these parishes all within close proximity of one another and I am eager to bring the youth of our congregations together in service, worship, and fun!

I am looking forward to hosting two evening youth events this October, one for middle school and another for high school, which will include youth from St. Stephen's and SAHC. There are several exciting trips coming up as well as service project opportunities that will commence in the near future. Youth will be given the chance to work with communities and parishes that extend outside of the Maplewood area. I am currently working on a calendar that will feature all the upcoming youth events so that everyone has ample time to plan, and of course participate! Read more

BeingPresentForGodBeing Present for God

Cheryl Notari, Senior Warden
Cheryl Notari,
Senior Warden

You couldn't tell by looking at me today, but in my younger days, I was a pretty serious athlete.  I was actively recruited to play college field hockey, and I was recruited to play semi-professional softball. The reason I bring this up is that I always played my best when I had my head in the game. When I was able to clear my mind of the day's distractions or worries and be in the moment, I played the best games of my life.  I was in a zone and fully present.

Looking back on it now, I wish I had taken that lesson and applied it other things in my life sooner. Certainly, I have learned to be present, to the best of my abilities, with my work as a psychologist. Trying to be fully present for another person is part of the job. However, I sometimes fall short of being in the moment with Sharon and certainly with my family. But most often, I was falling short in being fully present in worship. The distractions of my life in the church were getting in the way of my full participation in the service. I was not present for God. Read more

Hunger: A Stewardship Focus

If I have but enough for myself and family, I am steward only for myself and them; if I have more, I am but a steward of that abundance for others." (George Herbert)

CROP Walk for Hunger Relief In the month of October, St. George's will continue to focus on hunger with a few highlighted activities. On Sunday, October 21, we will celebrate Bread for the World Sunday. Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Please watch for notices in the bulletin and listserv as we prepare for this day. A special food gathering will take place on that day to support local food pantries -- at St. Joseph's in Maplewood and Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange. We also support these food pantries with funds from the St. George's Outreach Committee. We are also exploring a relationship with a food pantry/soup kitchen at a West Orange Episcopal church.

On the last Sunday of the month - October 28 (1 p.m. in Memorial Park) - we will participate in the CROP Walk for Hunger Relief with other congregations of Maplewood and South Orange. The funds raised go to Church World Service for work nationally and internationally and to the local food programs which we designate. You can participate in several ways: you can walk in person or "virtually" and donations can be taken in person or on-line - or if you'd rather not walk, you can donate to the St. George's team. You can link directly to our walk here.

If you have any questions about any of this or would like more information about the work we can do around hunger, please contact Martha Gardner.

Have You Been Called?

Personal phone calls, from St. Georgians to St. Georgians, are part of the Stewardship outreach underway in earnest this month. The purpose of the calls: to discuss how our parish can best serve our community, and the role each member can play by pledging time, talent and, yes, financial resources to realize that vision.

October also will bring parishioners to Sunday services to share their personal stories of what it means to be a steward, to give back a portion of what's been given to each of us by God.

Your pledges of financial support for 2013 will be gathered at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 am services on Sunday, October 28. If you haven't received a pledge card, or need another one, please call the church office, 973-762-1319, and one will be sent to you. An electronic version of the card is available on the Stewardship page.

Newcomers' Dinner at the Rectory

The Newcomers & Greeters Committee is pleased to announce that invitations will soon be sent to newcomers and new members to have dinner with the Rector. The dinner will be held at the Rectory on Sunday, October 28 at 5 p.m.

It hoped that these gatherings will more quickly incorporate new members into the life of the parish, give them an opportunity to meet and greet other members, and help them to get a better understanding of life at St. George's. All newcomers, new members and committee chairs are welcome, too.

Seeking Crafters & Volunteers
for Crafts Bazaar

Crafts Bazaar St. George's will be holding a Crafts Bazaar on Saturday, November 24. Do you knit? Make jewelry? Candles or cards? We're looking for anyone who makes handmade items to showcase and sell. We'll charge a minimal table fee; a percentage of all sales will benefit St. George's. We need crafters and volunteers.

Please contact Kathy Carliner as soon as you can to reserve your craft table and to help out. Volunteers are needed! Spread the word to any crafters you know; all are welcome and the more we have, the more successful it will be!

Parish Directory Project

Parish Directory Project With so many communications options, it's easy for your information to be outdated quickly, and hard to keep up with the changes. Such is the fate of our parish directory, but we're working to change that. During September, you will see boards after each service listing your current contact/family data. Take a moment to review it, and if it is correct, place your initials next to the information. If any piece of the data is not correct, draw a line through the bad data, and submit the change (writing your name, the data you are changing, and the change in BLOCK letters) on the cards provided. Drop these cards in the box near the boards, or in the collection plate. For the future, we're working on a way to collect directory updates privately and securely online.

Thank you for helping to help us provide a new directory, helpful to both new and old parishioners!
