We hope most of you will be able to join us at Cross Roads; if you can't, please note that the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services will still take place at St. George's, led by the Rev. Bambi Koeniger.

There will be no Children's Chapel or Sunday School on May 6.

You can also read an interview with the Executive Director of Cross Roads, Anthony Briggs, conducted by our own Bruce Lyons. Displaying his trademark quirky sense of humor, Anthony explains how he sees having fun as compatible with spirituality.

Second Sunday Family Eucharist

On the second Sunday of each month, St. George's celebrates a lively Family Eucharist for small children at 9:15 a.m. The music, readings and homily are all child-friendly, and the children learn about one of the central rituals of the church through an instructed Eucharist.

All children are welcome, regardless of church membership.

There is no Children's Chapel or Sunday School on second Sundays.

Greetings!

There are lots of opportunities for fun and fellowship in May! First, there's a parish trip to Cross Roads Camp this coming Sunday for a special family day, including a Eucharist, picnic and games. Mid-month we'll have the Family Eucharist, Spiritual Salon and Movie Night. May will conclude with our traditional, festive wearing of red for Pentecost on the last Sunday, commemorating the arrival of the Holy Spirit after Easter.

Along with worship and fellowship, another practice that can bring us closer to God is... rest. Surprised? Read the article by Cheryl Notari sharing her experiences when she decided to "unplug" one day a week during Lent as part of her Sabbath observance.

See you in church!

The Rev. Bernie Poppe, Rector
The Rev. Bernie Poppe,
Rector

The season after Easter has a new energy. The weather is getting consistently better, and the spirit created by Holy Week and Easter stirs our spiritual yearning in a new way. At our Annual Meeting in March, we commented that with the work on the building taking a giant step forward, it's time to relax and develop community more in the joy of fellowship. Jesus said, "I came that you might have joy and that your joy may be full." There are many ways we can understand that, but certainly one way is the joy of friendship and peace of community.

On Sunday, May 6 we have a trip to Cross Roads Camp planned. While there will be the regular 8 and 10:30 a.m. services, we're hoping that most people will opt for the trip to Cross Roads Camp in Port Murray, NJ. It takes between 45 minutes to an hour to get there by car and is halfway between Routes 78 and 80 going west. We'll have the Eucharist outdoors at 11 a.m., followed by a potluck picnic lunch and games for kids AND adults. It's a way to play together. We've worked hard together for so many projects; let's have some fun together!

In line with that celebration, I hope that all our members -- both new and those who have been around for a long time -- will listen to the yearning of your own spirit in regard to the kinds of programs and events you might like to see at St. George's. "Lay leadership" is a term that has taken root in the Episcopal Church in general and at St. George's in particular. Leadership is the ability to see where there is a need and address it, or be open to a vision and share it with others who might see it as well and move toward it.

In the past, our lay leadership has contributed in so many ways to the life of the parish, and there's always room for more. Sometimes people are asked to do things, but at St. George's the door is open for an organic creation of programs and events. Discuss your ideas with me or any of the Vestry members, and see how creative we can be.

We worship together, work together and play together. Praise God!

Bernie

My dear friends,

Greetings, and Happy Eastertide! I hope many of you took advantage of the various services offered during Holy Week, and especially on Easter Day itself. As always, our choir folk rose to the occasion(s), giving up countless hours of their own free time to ensure that each service was thoroughly and lovingly prepared. By the time the Easter Vigil came around, we were all beginning to feel a bit like monks... Bravo to the choir!!!

The church year is beginning to wind down now, but there is plenty of work to be done before the choirs officially go on hiatus in June. So there is STILL time for you to join us. We'd love to have you! The adult choir rehearses Thursday nights beginning at 7:30 p.m. And each Sunday morning, we come together for a pre-service rehearsal, which starts at 9:30 a.m. Our youth choir rehearses every Tuesday afternoon from 4-5 p.m. They also sing at the 9:15 AM Family Service, which is scheduled on the 2nd Sunday of every month. So here's your chance. COME ONE, COME ALL!

Peace,

John Ayer

Message of Thanks
From Cantor Perry Fine

On Sunday evening, April 22, St. George's hosted the 35th Annual Interfaith Holocaust Commemoration service. Some of our choir members sang in an ad hoc choir comprised of folk from different churches and synagogues throughout the area. The following message was sent from the music director for the event, Cantor Perry Fine.

Congratulations to all for helping to make last night's Interfaith Holocaust Service so beautiful. With hardly any rehearsal at all, you made not only the music, but more importantly, the texts come alive!

Thank you to all the soloists who sang from the heart with passion and beauty, and to John Ayer and everyone at St. George's for their hospitality and warmth.

Blessings to you all!

Perry

Healing Ministry Meeting
& Wednesday Healing Services

Healing Ministry
On Saturday, May 5, we will hold our monthly Healing Ministry meeting from 10 a.m. until noon at the Rectory. This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in the topic of Christian healing or healing prayer in general. For more information, contact the Rev. Bernie Poppe, Rector.

(Due to the diaconal ordinations taking place at the Cathedral on the first Saturday of June, there will not be a June Healing Ministry meeting.)

All are also invited to attend our regular Wednesday healing service at 7:30 p.m. A Holy Eucharist with healing prayers incorporated into the liturgy, it's quiet, beautiful and perfect for prayer support.
MothersDayMother's Day at St. George's

moms & babies
We celebrate Mother's Day at St. George's in a slightly different way. For the sixth year, we are planning a baby shower to collect needed items on behalf of North Porch Women and Infant's Center. North Porch is an emergency service providing formula, baby food, diapers, clothing, bed linens, and baby care supplies to needy mothers and infants in Newark, Paterson, and Dover.

We are asking parishioners to bring any of the many items that North Porch gives to its clients each week. North Porch's needs depend on storage space and the season. You will find collecting boxes in the Narthex. North Porch is hoping to receive the following items this Mother's Day:
  • Similac Advance formula (blue label)
  • Disposable diapers in large sizes 5 and 6
  • Diaper cream
  • Stage One baby food
  • Gifts cards from Shop Rite, Target, or Wal-Mart are always welcome

The Outreach Committee will thank you effusively and will host a festive coffee hour immediately following the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday, May 13. Contact Lindsay McHugh with any questions.

Capital Campaign Committee Gives Thanks!

HVACThanks to the support and dedication of the people of St. George's, we now have a comfortable year-round venue for worship and other community activities. We successfully replaced the malfunctioning steam-heat system and added cooling units to the new forced-air system. Great progress has been made toward our Capital Campaign goal of $332,500 to pay for this work. However, we still have a way to go.

If you haven't pledged yet to help us cover the costs of our new heating and cooling system, you can do so at any time by filling out a pledge card. The campaign will run through 2013, and payments may be made in a lump sum or in installments over a period. Contact Lindsay McHugh or Clint Rataczak for more information.

Spiritual Salon is a gathering for informal conversations over a potluck dinner about spiritual issues and topics. Books will provide the springboard for the conversation in different areas of faith and spirituality. The group is open to all.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, May 13, to discuss In the Valley of the Shadow by James L. Kugel. We'll meet at 5 p.m. at the Rectory.

Please RSVP to the Rev. Bernie Poppe, Rector.

MovieNightMovie Night:
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

Movie NightJoin us on Friday, May 18, to watch
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Based on Alexander McCall Smith's successful novels, this HBO series tells the story of a creative and successful detective agency in Botswana. Precious Ramotswe plies her trade as a private investigator in Botswana, uncovering corruption and malfeasance with the help of auto repair shop proprietor Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni and a preternaturally gifted typist named Mma Makutsi. We will show Episode 2: Beauty and Integrity. Mma Makutsi investigates the behavior of contestants in a local beauty pageant, while Mma Ramotswe has trouble solving the case of Nandira Patel's mystery boyfriend. To make things worse, the contemptible Cephas Buthelezi opens a rival agency and is intent on taking the ladies down.

Our movie begins at 7:30 p.m. in St. George's Resource Center. Popcorn and a beverage are provided. For more information, please contact Aleeda Crawley

SabbathMy Lenten Experiment with Sabbath Keeping
By Cheryl Notari

Cheryl Notari
Cheryl Notari

As part of my Lenten discipline this year, I chose to intentionally keep Sunday as the Sabbath. Initially I wasn't certain what that would really mean. Prior to this experience, I had always thought of keeping the Sabbath as attending worship services but not much more than that. Even being fully present at Sunday worship was becoming difficult for me. Over the last year, I had allowed my work to creep into my Sundays. As a psychologist, often working six days a week, my work week can be emotionally and sometimes spiritually taxing. And while I was not seeing patients on Sunday, I was finding it difficult to leave my work in the office. Additionally, I began to support and encourage doing "church business" on Sundays, setting up committee meetings for Sunday and doing church business before and after the service. It all seemed convenient and logical to me. Sunday was the one day that all of us had free.

Slowly, over time, I found my focus during the Sunday service drifting away from prayer and worship. I was caught up in the lists of people I needed to speak to and the things that I needed to get done. And, as a consequence, my relationship with God began to suffer.

In an attempt to find my way back to God, I began to see a spiritual director and she suggested that at least for Lent, I try keeping the Sabbath on Sundays. That would mean no work, no household chores, no shopping, and the hardest of all, no church business on Sundays. "No church business!" That seemed impossible to me. Even though I doubted that I could do it, I agreed to try.
