While February is officially Black History Month, we seem to find a way to celebrate our diversity in many ways, every month.  It is one of the many special things that we embrace at St. George's, and they make us shine!

Rector's Message

Rev. Poppe

During 2011 we spent a lot of time talking about our financial stewardship. We had significant challenges that St. Georgians rose to meet. In addition to our regular annual pledge drive for operating expenses, our heating system failed in March and needed replacing and thattook a large part of our focus.

We are so much more than that--and so is stewardship! Stewardship refers not only to the decisions we make about our money, but our time and talent as well--in fact, all the resources we have. Just as God is the creator of all things, we as stewards have decisions to make about all that we have. Christian stewardship means that we make these decisions consistent with our Christian commitment to live out our Baptismal vows. Jesus teaches us to love God and our neighbor and our stewardship should reflect that.

In the early part of this year, we'll be spending some time on this topic as a way of helping everyone to consider the intentional decisions we all make about our time and talent and other resources. Our Senior Warden, Cheryl Notari, has prepared a survey she'll discuss in an article below. Please look for it and spend some time with it.

Over the past couple of months two of our members, Ulysses Dietz and Doug Franklin, spoke to the congregation of their stewardship of time in ministries they're involved in here, namely the Altar Guild and Choir. Hopefully, their talks and the survey will inspire you to take some chances and get involved in new ways at church--or even elsewhere--that give a living expression to your faith through actions.

The survey includes current ministries and possible ministries. I want to assure everyone that if there is a new or different ministry or activity that you would like to see here and are willing to organize, there is wide latitude to make it happen.

How we use the church building is an example of the stewardship our church community exercises. Did you know that we are so much more than a place for Sunday worship? This is what's going on here regularly during the week:

  • Healing Prayer Service and Eucharist (approximately 8 people, Wednesdays)
  • Performance Theater Workshop (approximately 200 young people weekly, Saturdays)
  • Kinderenrichment (12 preschool students daily)
  • Five separate 12 step groups (approximately 100 people weekly)
  • Writers Workshop (approximately 8 people)
  • Easy Yoga (for approximately 6 seniors, Mondays)
  • Piano lessons (approximately 20 students, weekly)
  • Dignity (approximately 10 gay Roman Catholic worshipers, Sundays)
  • Sword Fighting classes (approx 5 students for Renaissance Fairs!!, Tuesdays)
  • Bible Study (approximately 5, Sundays)

We are also available for private parties, community events, and meetings. We are a busy place and all these activities are consistent with our mission of worship, youth ministries, cultural events and community resource. In preparing for our first Capital Campaign in 2005 our congregation worked hard to identify areas we wanted to see develop. Six years later, we saw that happening.

Stewardship is a constant call to make decisions about how we live our lives consistent with our faith and values. It's not just about money, though as Jesus said, "where you rtreasure is, there will be your heart also." Our money is put to good use backing up where our hearts are, and the ministry we are called to.

Raise your awareness of the ministries you're already involved in at church or beyond. Challenge yourself to consider new ministries or invite others into some that inspire you!

A Survey of Time & Talent
Cheryl Notari, Senior Warden
Cheryl Notari, Senior Warden

The concept of stewardship is based on the belief that all that we have, and all that we are, comes from God. We commit ourselves to stewardship as a way of thanking God. It is much more than the financial support of our ministry together. It is also includes the decisions we make about how we use our time and our talents. Recognizing that a gift of time and talent can require some thoughtful discernment, the stewardship committee has put together a "time and talent" survey to help you explore and consider how you might choose to use your gifts.

We are encouraging each member of the parish, from middle school age on up, to take the time to consider how your gifts might help with God's work at St. George's. The survey asks that you check the boxes of the skills that you are willing to offer or areas of interests that you would like to explore. As you fill out the survey, you will notice that there are a number of items that are listed that are not yet formal ministries of St. George's. These items include things like offering rides to church or to the doctor, and Vacation Bible School. If there are a number of people interested in these ministries, we can begin to offer them at St. George's.

Watch for the survey, or contact Cheryl Notari for more information.

Music Ministry
choir notes

My dear friends,

Greetings and Happy Epiphany! Now that the festivities of Christmas (and all the wonderful music that adorns them) are well behind us, we can now look forward to new and exciting celebrations.

At St. George's, the entire month of February is devoted to Black History Month, and, as usual, the music department is planning to celebrate this important tradition in grand style. Every week will feature a spiritual sung by our adult choir, and many of your favorite gospel hymns will be featured from one of our fabulous hymnals--in particular, Lift Every Voice And Sing ("LEVAS").

A special jazz service has been scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 19 at the 10:30 AM service. Richard Berggren is polishing up his various trumpets for the occasion, and has arranged for a special jazz combo to join us. You won't want to miss it, so make sure to be there--and bring all of your friends, too!

May the New Year bring each and every one of you an abundance of peace, joy, and prosperity!

Affectionately,

John Ayer

A Special Note
: In preparation for Black History Month, you might wish to browse through the "LEVAS" hymnal and check out its contents (copies can be found in the church pews). It's a true musical and literary gold mine, and a wonderful resource to have on hand. If any of you come across a special hymn that you find particularly inspiring, please let me know. I'll make sure to include it in one of our upcoming services.

Parishioner Spotlight: Do You Like to Sing?

Choir member Doug Franklin shares how the choir lifts his voice and his spirit.

I have always enjoyed singing. As a kid, I learned to sing pop songs and rock songs; I knew all the Peter, Paul, and Mary songs by heart, and I could imitate Dylan with the best of them. Never really learned to read music, though.

A friend of mine in Troop 5, which was sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, persuaded me to join the choir there, because they had some good looking girls, he said. We joined, and they did. We became members of the church. I had gone to Unitarian Sunday School before that, but I ended up being baptized a Presbyterian.

We had some fun times with the girls and the choir, and then we finished high school and went off to college and I became an agnostic. And things stayed that way for many years, until I had some hard times in my life, between a career crisis and our family being overwhelmed with the care of my son Michael. Many of you know Michael--he is a beautiful person, but he has autism and can be very difficult sometimes. I entered into a period of depression, when it was all I could do just to get up in the morning.

Through friends, we learned about the St. George's Revels, where people wore costumes and celebrated, and there was music and merry making. We came and were welcomed and my younger son, Nicholas, danced all evening on the stage of the parish hall. And I remember Diane Sammons was dressed like Snow White. It was a typical St. George's welcoming experience.

One thing that happened soon after I came here--I'll never forget--is that Barry Stopfel asked me to teach Sunday School. And I said, "I can't do that, I don't feel like I've reached the place I'd need to be to be able to do that." And he said, "Where you are is good enough."

Movie Night:  Rejoice & Shout

Noted music documentarian Don McGlynn takes viewers on a journey through 200 years of African American Christian music, using rare performance footage, audio, stills and interviews to document the history and power of gospel music. The influential groups and musicians profiled include the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, The Staple Singers, Mahalia Jackson and Smokey Robinson, and historians interviewed include Anthony Heilbut and Bill Carpenter.

Our location is  PTW, located at 1 Pierson Road in Maplewood. PTW is just off Valley Road, with the driveway entrance just past Weichert Real Estate.  It is the barn-sized building across from the garden shop, and ample parking is available. Our movie begins at 7:30 PM. Popcorn and a beverage are provided.

Coffee, Tea, & You!
choir notes

It's always welcoming to have coffee, savories and sweets waiting in the parish hall after the 10:30 AM and second Sunday family services. The food and drinks do not magically appear as manna or from Keebler elves, however. Instead, we on the Coffee Hour Committee work our magic to ensure there is always something good to enjoy after the services.

We solicit parish volunteers to provide "a snack or two for 50 people", a dozen or two of bagels or donuts or the like. And to help set up and clean up. A list is provided for signup at the entrance to the parish hall. Or you can email Dan Helming. Every family unit should consider giving once a year!

The committee has a representative at every 10:30 AM service to assist. The committee supplies coffee, milk, juice, and accoutrements and will usually ensure something is there, if not from a parish volunteer, then from the store or the freezer.

The committee is anticipating losing a few members in the new year--and taking back a few, but always needs new volunteers to assist in making the coffee, setting up the serving table, and cleaning up afterwards. You're assigned a Sunday only twice a quarter and if you're away, even last-minute, you can kick your assignment back to the committee. Being on the Coffee Hour Committee is a great way to meet fellow parishioners and to try new recipes if you enjoy cooking (although this is not a requirement). Please consider joining our ranks. Contact Dan Helming.

We are also coordinating the Children's Service to be self-sufficient from the families participating in that service. (just 12 Sundays per year of cookies and iced tea/coffee!) Christine Carlson and Amy Cox-Martins are leading that effort. See them to sign up for one of the months this year!

Annual Meeting
MLK sketch 2

St. George's Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 18, after the 10:30 a.m. service. The Annual Meeting concerns the election of Vestry members, the review of the budget and other issues from the past year and the anticipation of the coming year. It's a time to learn about how the church works and forms its ministry.

All members are encouraged to come; there will  be a single service that day at 10:30 AM. The service will be followed by the election of Vestry members, and a luncheon in the Parish Hall with presentations and a time for questions. We have a strong parish, and a meeting such as this helps to keep it strong and focused on God's service!

Vestry Notes
The vestry has been busy for the past several months dealing with issues ranging from funding the repairs and replacements needed in our aging building, to the use of our space by tenants, and the stewardship of our parish finances.  A summary of some key decisions are as follows:

In December 2011, a decision was made to begin to use some early gifts to the Capital Campaign to repay some of the funds we borrowed from our investment funds to pay for the new HVAC system.

  • The Diocesan Pledge percentage for 2012 will remain at 18% of operating income.
  • The percentage allocated to St. George's Outreach budget for 2012 was raised from 4% to 5% of income.
  • The vestry voted to commit resources to hire a part-time Youth Minister in time for the 2012-2013 school year.
  • A new part-time Sexton was hired.

On the Bishop's visit, January 8, 2012

Dear Rev. Poppe and congregants of St. George's Church,

Thank you so much for the warm welcome you gave my husband and me on Sunday. You can just feel the openness and hospitality of the congregation as you enter the doors. I loved the music and especially hearing the students from PTW.

Mark and I enjoyed the reception that followed the service and meeting many of the members. Thank you also for the flowers. I look forward to a return visit.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Olson

On Beth Rauen Sciano's Ordination gifts (December 10, 2011)

Dear St. George's Family,

Thank you so very much! It was wonderful to have so many of you join me for my ordination to the priesthood in December as well as my Diaconal ordination in June. Without St. George's I would not be who I am as a person of faith today. Thank you for the absolutely beautiful chasuble based on my diaconal ordination stole. I have enjoyed wearing it during the Christmas season.

Thank you as well for the tippet - a gift for my diaconal ordination, along with the academic hood from Bernie. I am all set to lead Morning and Evening prayer.

Thank you for your prayers, support, and the many blessings you have been in my life as well as Peter's and Phoebe's. May St. George's always be a community that nurtures all of our vocations in the church, lay and ordained.

Much Love,

Beth

On the recent purchases of holiday gift cards benefitting Interfaith Hospitality Network:

Dear Rev. Poppe,

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Essex County would like to thank St. George's Episcopal Church for providing $130.00 in gift cards from various retailers. Because of your church's generosity, families in our network will now have the means to provide their children with a meaningful holiday. How empowering this is to moms and dads who strive to rise above their present circumstances!

Our goal at IHN is to help families in Essex County work towards housing stability. Being able to maintain a stable residence makes life better for everyone in their household, especially their children. Not only do children perform better in school, they also realize improved health and positive social relationships. IHN would not be able to help families in such a significant way without the support we receive from concerned individuals and congregations like St. George's.

Again, thank you for bringing holiday cheer to our families. May 2012 be a joy-filled year at St. George's.

Blessings,

Tia Aiery

Executive Director

On the Parish's gifts to North Porch:

Dear Friends,

The outstanding parish response to the Christmas appeal for food and diapers for North Porch Women and Infants' Centers was typical of the generosity of this parish. The first batch of donations was delivered right after Christmas and a second batch will be handed over next week.

Thank you so much for helping this ministry to feed and clothe the hungry babies of Northern New Jersey. For more information about North Porch, please visit the website at www.northporch.org .
