Summertime Pool Maintenance Here we are in the middle of a hot, humid SW Florida summer. The time of year when our swimming pools get their biggest workout! Now even though most of us enjoy our backyard pools year round, we tend to use it a lot more this time of year.
Our pools also take quite a beating from the elements. As we all have recently witnessed, torrential downpours can overfill our pools and cause dramatic changes to the water chemistry and clarity. In addition to that we can get quite a bit of vegetation debris blown into our pools, add to that the dirt, body oils, sweat, etc. that get introduced into the water from swimmers and you can end up with quite the mess.
This of course is where a professional, experienced, pool service can prove invaluable. Pool maintenance can be pretty complex and unless you are knowledgeable and also disciplined in your efforts, it is something best left to the pros.
A pool technician will test your pool water and make all the proper adjustments to bring it back into the normal ranges. They will also clean the pool and eliminate the debris built up in the water, while also making sure your equipment is in perfect running order. However an important part of the puzzle is adequate run time of the equipment. We recommend a minimum of 10 hours per day, to insure that the water "turns over" enough times through the filter, plus it also insures the chlorinator gets adequate flow to disperse the needed chlorine.
One of the biggest problems which can occur this time of year involves salt systems, lots of folks believe these are "low or no maintenance" systems but in reality come with their own set of problems. Salt systems convert salt to chlorine but to do this they also need enough run time. Some people like to only run their pool a few hours a day which does not allow the system to generate any where near enough chlorine.
Another problem that occurs with salt systems happens when we get our heavy summer rains, the rains not only dilute the chlorine level but it also can drop the salt level below where the system needs to operate, so now you have a pool with no chlorine and a system that can't generate any more either, swamp time!
