Greetings!
Welcome to the May edition of our Sanibel/Captiva E-Newsletter.
A-May-Zing Month of May.....one of our favorite months on the islands!
This month we celebrate freedom with the festival of Cinco de Mayo and remember those brave men and women who have fought to preserve our freedom on Memorial Day as well as honor our Mothers on Mother's Day. May is also the beginning of Sea Turtle Nesting Season, American Bike Month, Flower Month and National BBQ Month! May Day brings to mind sharing the new blooms of spring with friends. Our expert, Bob Walsh is so busy helping island residents beautify their landscape that we decided to bring back a column from our archives about adding color to your island garden.
So this month our Guest Columnist section will provide authoritative advice on "A Blooming Bonanza Of Color For Your Island Garden" from our very own Island Expert to help you optimize your real estate goals.
Speaking of what is blooming.......there are some wonderful "End of Season" opportunities. Take advantage of this timing to bring your dreams of Island Ownership to fruition this May!
Come for a visit ..... you'll want to stay for a
Lifetime .....
and we can help you make it happen ......

A Blooming Bonanza Of Color
All across the islands the fragrance of blooming Gardenias & Jasmine fill the air. Flowering trees like Cassia, Tabebuia & Poinciana are creating an eye pleasing show as well across the islands. The early heat of spring has produced an amazing performance by all blooming plants. May being National Flower Month is a great time to bring new life & color to your garden.
The addition of just a couple spectacular flowering shrubs or trees can immediately change your landscape look and bring a smile to your face, enjoyment to your garden experience and make your garden a reflection of your spirit. Hibiscus, Bougainvillea and Ixora are good choices and they come in a wide variety of colors. It's a great time to get new plants established. The warm days will let them send roots deep and get them ready for the wonders of the summer rains. You will get to enjoy their current spring color and have a more mature plant in full bloom again in the fall!
The butterflies & hummingbirds are really starting to show up at our garden
showcase In The Garden ....3889 Sanibel Captiva Rd.
Our demonstration butterfly garden is a great place to see what types butterfly plants suit your landscape. Bahama Cassia, Firebush and Scarlett Milkweed are drawing in a multitude of butterfly varieties. Consider an arbor with Corky Stem Passion Vine or Cape Honeysuckle which would bring a new & wonderful addition to your landscape and will surely draw hummers & butterflies to your garden.
For the more adventurous gardeners, how about your own fruit garden, with citrus, bananas, avocados or mango. It is a great time to get them started. The yellow Canna & Blue Flag Iris (our wedding flower) are a fabulous way to color up any low lying, moist retention areas you may have in your garden. They also go great with a small water feature or fountain pot that adds that auditory sense of tranquility to any landscape. With Mother's Day approaching it is a great time to give a live beautiful blooming plant that can be enjoyed not for days in a vase but produce years of enjoyment in your garden or in a wonderful unique piece of pottery for your pool deck or lanai. Don't forget to give the gift of love to your plants before the summer rains arrive...food. With the Lee County fertilizer ordinance black out starting June 1 and the Sanibel black out starting July 1 you need to get a good 8-2-12 fertilizer (ordinance compliant) out on your trees and shrubs now so they can expand their root systems and be ready for the summer rains. This also allows the fertilizer to be used by the plants rather than end up as run off this summer in our wonderful estuaries. Please call us for any information you may need to help make your garden a wonderful experience.

Good News For Captiva!
Governor Rick Scott signed into law April 6, 2012 a $70.8 billion dollar spending plan for Florida during an event in St. Johns County. The General Appropriations Act for FY 2012-13 provides nearly $22 million for statewide beach management projects. The Legislature provided funding for the top seven beach projects of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's local government funding request priority list. The Captiva Erosion Prevention District's upcoming beach nourishment project was included in the top seven beach projects. For Captiva Community Panel
We were proud to host a tent at the recent Monday After The Masters Sunset Community Celebration to benefit the Captiva Community Panel at beautiful South Seas Island Resort. It was an afternoon of fabulous golf, food and fun. This is sure to become an annual event! The Captiva Community Panel exists to serve Captiva by maintaining the historic pattern of development on this barrier island. Such historical growth has consisted of unobtrusive, low-density residential use coupled with limited commercial development and vehicular traffic. Sensitive to such common concerns, Captiva community planning is to be maintained in consideration of an environment consisting of clean offshore waters, diverse and healthy marine life and robust native vegetation.

GREEN TIPS for MOTHER'S DAY!
 |
Lignumvitae "Tree of Life"
|
Every May a day is set aside to pay tribute to the nurturing women in your life. Here are some creative ways to celebrate that mother's everywhere are sure to love, especially Mother Nature.
1. Card choices Many think Mother's Day was the creation of the greeting card industry, but the concept has been around since the ancient Greeks. Today you have more choices than ever for sending a card:
Good - send a tree-free card Better - Make your own Mother's Day cards with recycled materials you find around the house. Best - Send a pretty digital Mother's Day card inhabitots.com 2. Adopt a tree. A great way to pay tribute to the Mother in your life now, or one you have lost. If you don't have a yard to accommodate another tree, check with local schools, parks and charities. Donated trees are almost always appreciated. Our favorite memorial tree: The Lignumvitae - a local, slow growing hardwood, its name is Latin for "Tree of Life". 3. Give the Gift of Music: A Mother's Mix. Moms today - like everyone - love their smart devices with the ability to listen to music. Why not create a digital music compilation of tunes centered around songs that make you think of mom? A four hour collection of Mom-centered music and digital feed is available from npr.org 4. Turtle Time - The amazing journey of our local mothers of the sea. Every May, these mothers begin the return to the place of their birth to lay their nests. This Mother's Day if you are fortunate enough to be near one of our beaches, take a morning walk with mom to look for turtle tracks. You may be lucky enough to find one, and if not - it will still be a beautiful way to begin your mother's day and think about your mom's own amazing journey. It's National BBQ Month!
This Is An Oldie But A Goodie!
So Mom's Give This Recipe To The Men In Your Life...
You May Not Only Get Mother's Day Off From Cooking But Many More Summer Breaks As Well!
Beer Can Chicken Recipe Courtesy of Bob Blumer
Ingredients * 1 (4-pound) whole chicken
* 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
* 2 tablespoons salt
* 1 teaspoon black pepper
* 3 tablespoons of your favorite dry spice rub
* 1 can beer
Directions Remove neck and giblets from chicken and discard. Rinse chicken inside and out, and pat dry with paper towels. Rub chicken lightly with oil then rub inside and out with salt, pepper and dry rub. Set aside. Open beer can and take several gulps (make them big gulps so that the can is half full). Place beer can on a solid surface. Grabbing a chicken leg in each hand, plunk the bird cavity over the beer can. Transfer the bird-on-a-can to your grill and place in the center of the grate, balancing the bird on its 2 legs and the can like a tripod.
Cook the chicken over medium-high, indirect heat (i.e. no coals or burners on directly under the bird), with the grill cover on, for approximately 1 1/4 hours or until the internal temperature registers 165 degrees F in the breast area and 180 degrees F in the thigh, or until the thigh juice runs clear when stabbed with a sharp knife. Remove from grill and let rest for 10 minutes before carving. Back to Top |
