Solar Pool Heating
"October means autumn, slightly cooler weather especially at night."
This means our lives here in SW Florida will be much more comfortable, but how much longer will you be swimming in your pool? When you first moved to Florida I bet you thought you would be swimming all year round. This is the Sunshine state and we are located in the tropics. But most people are finding their pool water to be too cold to comfortably swim from about mid-October to May. That is nearly seven months! Your pool, the most expensive room in your house and requires the most maintenance is only useable for seven months. What to do? Heat the pool. How will you heat the pool? The options are electric, gas or solar. With all you will have an initial investment but solar requires ZERO operating costs.
With Solar Pool Heating (SPH) you use your existing pool pump to divert the pool water through the solar collectors which collect the suns energy or heat, very simple, think of the garden hose technology. With solar there is virtually no maintenance as if your pool pump works the solar is working. To determine the amount of solar panels needed and therefore the cost: you need to take a few things into consideration.
1. How warm do you want your pool or how much heat gain to you hope to realize? Most people are comfortable with 80 degrees or more for a pool water temperature. I personally like 85 degrees or more.
2. Where will you place the SPH panels? Typically on the roof, but can also be mounted to ground racks. Price will also vary depending on the installation method including roof type.
3. Which direction will my SPH panels face? South is best, then West, East and I would not recommend North.
4. Will you use a cover or blanket over the pool in the winter? This will usually gain you approximately 5 degrees over using solar alone simply because you can help retain the heat gain at night and not "start from scratch" heating the water each morning.
Solar Pool Heating is an excellent way to heat your swimming pool. Solar will not only heat the water but also make you feel good as you will be using no fossil fuels to accomplish the heating and at zero operating expense is extremely economical.
There are many other ways to incorporate solar into your lives; including Solar Domestic Hot Water (SDHW) systems, Solar Attic Fans, Solar Tubular Sky Lights, Photovoltaic (PV), Solar Air Conditioning and much more.

Besides the refreshing lower temperatures, my favorite thing about October is Halloween.
This month's green tip is making inventive costumes with recycled materials. The challenge of turning junk into a one-of-a-kind costume is not only good for the environment, its fun! Here are some costume ideas to help you get your Hallowgreen on!
1. LEGOS! Who didn't love them as a child, or love them still? Recycling boxes, paper bowls and some paint and let your imagination run wild. Just like you did with the real legos! 2. Have a broken black umbrella laying around? With some black clothing you have the makings of scary vampire bat costume!
3. Outdated, unused electronics? Add some boxes and you could be WALL-E or another cool robot.
4. Since the use of flash drives and digital music what is a person to do with all those extra CDs? Im thinking DISCO BALL costume! They also fit nicely into knight costumes as added shields. 5. And finally, fabric scraps from old clothes or blankets and some hot glue you can be transformed into an owl or bird costume.

Cypress Cottage Construction Update:
Behind The Walls: Spray Foam Insulation
Cypress Cottage Construction Feature
As the Cypress Cottage on Wightman Lane takes shape, this months construction update focuses on what goes on behind the drywall. Spray Foam insulation - both closed and open cell, is used throughout the Cypress Cottage. This insulative barrier provides: - A high R-Value which minimizes hot and cold spots in a home to improve efficiency and comfort.
- Rigidity provides added structural integrity to roof.
- As a secondary moisture vapor barrier, it helps reduce the risk of moisture intrusion in the wall cavity
This provides homebuyers: - Outstanding energy efficiency
- Superior comfort and indoor air quality
- Enhanced moisture management
- Added structural integrity
- Excellent sound control
The expansion of foam as this product is sprayed is an amazing process. |
