Is A Salt Pool For You?

 Q: I've seen some salt pools on the island, but don't know much about them. What are the benefits of having a salt pool versus having a traditional chlorine pool?

 

 

 

   

 

 
A: We have had several homeowners convert their pools to salt, and have heard extremely positive feedback, but every homeowner has to decide if a salt pool is something that would benefit them personally. Most people do not switch to a salt system to save money. They switch because of convenience and swimmer comfort. Here we will explain how a salt system works, its benefits, and then the choice is up to you!


First, and most importantly, a salt system will not turn your pool into the Gulf of Mexico. The standard salt concentration in a pool is about 3,000 parts per million (for reference, the Gulf has a salt concentration of about 35,000 parts per million).

Second, your pool will still be sanitized by chlorine. As the salt passes through the system's cell it is converted to hypochlorous acid (the active form in chlorine). Here is where the convenience factor comes in. Instead of having to buy, transport, and store liquid chlorine or tabs, you will now have your own miniature chlorine factory. As long as the system is on, and water is flowing, you will have a set supply of sanitizer pumped into your pool. This programmed supply of chlorine will allow you to keep your sanitizer level slightly lower, which will help those with sensitive skin. It also helps to eliminate algae from forming. It is important to remember that you will still need to check and adjust the sanitizer production and other chemicals in your pool on a regular basis.

Third, a majority of salt pool owners have said that swimmer comfort has increased since switching to a salt system. Think of it as the same principle as a water softener. The salt in your pool will soften the water helping to keep your skin from feeling dry and chalky, and also extends the life of your bathing suits!
