Now This Is A Truly Great Fish Story!

"Captiva Island, where I live and work, is a very special location. Its surrounding waters are part of a unique ecosystem. The fresh water rivers to our north and south interact with the bountiful saltwater of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. In between, mangrove islands galore intersperse the grassy bottoms of Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island Sound and San Carlos Bay. This unique combination makes for some of the best fishing in all the world.

I am Dave Jensen, and I work with my brothers & sister at our Jensen's Resort and Marina. We have been lucky enough to be doing this for over 35 years now and, during that time, I have been witness to thousands of pleasurable moments as visitors and locals alike describe their fishing and boating experiences. We
find that while our guests' levels of enthusiasm may vary, always the interaction with our local waters has given each and every one of them great joy.

We have many chances to enjoy fishing, and with Father's Day in June, what a great time to know fishing at its best...as the beginning of summer vacation season happens to be the best catching time of the year. From shore, our incredible beaches provide an opportunity to catch sea trout, whiting, and Spanish mackerel. If you are staying at South Seas Resort you have the waters of Redfish Pass to enjoy, and all kinds of catches are made here from grouper to grunts to mangrove snappers. At the south end of Captiva Island, the currents of Blind Pass flow between Sanibel and Captiva and also provide a unique type of fishing. If you're looking to rent or buy tackle along with bait, our Jensen's Marina on Captiva, or Castaway's Marina, close by on Sanibel, can help you.

If you would like to get out on a boat to enjoy fishing, all of Captiva's friendly marinas offer rental boats. Along with rental boats, the marinas at Jensen's, 'Tween Waters, and South Seas offer knowledgeable charter fishing guides.

Also, if you are one to stay indoors and enjoy air conditioned comfort, the pleasure of fishing can still be part of your day! Local authors Randy Wayne White and Carlene Fredericka Brennen have written a great book on the subject that covers the famous history of tarpon fishing in these local waters. The short stories and beautiful photos are fantastic. I especially enjoyed reading about author Zane Grey's special connection to our area.Ultimate Tarpon Book

Make your plans now for a genuine June getaway to Captiva Island You will have a wonderful fishing opportunity, or at least the chance to read about it!"

Call Jensen's Resort and Marina to rent a cottage and a boat, buy bait and the Ultimate Tarpon Book as well as many other fishing supplies and souvenirs!

 Batten Down The Hatches:

Eco-friendly Ways To Protect Your Investment

Green Tips Home

Historic Building: Christiansted,

St Croix USVI

Tropical storms are a part of the natural weather patterns that come from living in the sub-tropics. It is what allows our foliage to thrive and grow in such lush abundance. This month we will focus on different options for keeping your home safe from tropical storms.

Operable Shutters - Historical Caribbean architecture is rich with classic board and batten shutters. These heavy, operable shutters come in many styles. Now available from recyclable, eco-friendly products you can achieve this classic look and protection without the weight or expense of traditional wood.

Hurricane Netting - New to the scene is an ultra strong mesh net which locks down using reinforced grommets. This lightweight, code compliant, affordable option is a creative solution for sealing off balconies, breezeways, boats on trailers or other items that you would like to give some extra attention.

Impact Resistant Windows and Doors - There is a reason this option is favored by current building code and insurance companies. Designed to withstand winds greater than what is likely to affect our area, these windows and doors are also extremely energy efficient.

The use of operable board and batten shutter has been a trademark of classic Caribbean architecture.  This is one of the influences for the Cypress Cottage under construction now on Wightman Lane in Captiva. Click here for more details.

Art Monahan, General Contractor, grew up in St. Croix and later returned to the island as a residential builder.   Art is now President of Seacoast Cottage Company.  For more information he can be reached at 239-462-2679.
