A Blooming Bonanza Of Color
All across the islands the fragrance of blooming Gardenias & Jasmine fill the air. Flowering trees like Cassia, Tabebuia & Poinciana are creating an eye pleasing show as well across the islands. The early heat of spring has produced an amazing performance by all blooming plants. May being National Flower Month is a great time to bring new life & color to your garden. The addition of just a couple spectacular flowering shrubs or trees can immediately change your landscape look and bring a smile to your face, enjoyment to your garden experience and make your garden a reflection of your spirit. Hibiscus, Bougainvillea and Ixora are good choices and they come in a wide variety of colors. It's a great time to get new plants established. The warm days will let them send roots deep and get them ready for the wonders of the summer rains. You will get to enjoy their current spring color and have a more mature plant in full bloom again in the fall!
The butterflies & hummingbirds are really starting to show up at our garden showcase In The Garden ....3889 Sanibel Captiva Rd. Our demonstration butterfly garden is a great place to see what types butterfly plants suit your landscape. Bahama Cassia, Firebush and Scarlett Milkweed are drawing in a multitude of butterfly varieties. Consider an arbor with Corky Stem Passion Vine or Cape Honeysuckle which would bring a new & wonderful addition to your landscape and will surely draw hummers & butterflies to your garden. For the more adventurous gardeners, how about your own fruit garden, with citrus, bananas, avocados or mango. It is a great time to get them started. The yellow Canna & Blue Flag Iris (our wedding flower) are a fabulous way to color up any low lying, moist retention areas you may have in your garden. They also go great with a small water feature or fountain pot that adds that auditory sense of tranquility to any landscape. With Mother's Day approaching it is a great time to give a live beautiful blooming plant that can be enjoyed not for days in a vase but produce years of enjoyment in your garden or in a wonderful unique piece of pottery for your pool deck or lanai.
Don't forget to give the gift of love to your plants before the summer rains arrive...food. With the Lee County fertilizer ordinance black out starting June 1 and the Sanibel black out starting July 1 you need to get a good 8-2-12 fertilizer (ordinance compliant) out on your trees and shrubs now so they can expand their root systems and be ready for the summer rains. This also allows the fertilizer to be used by the plants rather than end up as run off this summer in our wonderful estuaries. Please call us for any information you may need to help make your garden a wonderful experience.

Celebrating National BBQ Month With Outdoor Culinary Options
 | Firebird Grill |
We are so fortunate to live in Southwest Florida where the climate is right for outdoor living year round. Its no wonder that 75% of residents in Florida have some type of outdoor cooking capability.
If you are considering updating your outdoor culinary options, here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Consider builidng your grilling area into your landscape plan. The use of pergola with native vines make a beautiful backdrop.
- Keep the area close enough to the kitchen that it is easy to access with your hands full.
- Make sure you locate your barbecue so flame and smoke is safely distanced from other permanentobjects, including foliage. If you have a roof on your cooking area, build in fans and vents to conduct smoke away.
- Make sure to build in sufficient cabinet and storage space. Also consider room for outdoor appliances such as a smoker or refrigerator.
- Choose stone or gravel flooring or another organic material that will be easy to clean from grease and spills.
- Consider recycled materials like re-purposed wood, stone or cement when building. Look for some of the interesting outdoor counter top like those using recycled glass.
- What type of grill is best? There are so many choices!
- A propane grill has the lowest carbon emissions.
- Caribbean-style pit barbecues are perhaps the oldest form of Florida cooking methods. Consider building it using recycled bricks or cinder blocks.
- Another fun option is the Firebird Grill. Made from recycled propane tanks this table top grill has a fun social feel -kind of like Mongolian BBQ meets fondue. These hand crafted grills are real works of art.
Not the do-it-yourself type? Contact Seacoast Cottage Company or another Florida licensed, insured contractor to assist with the process. You already live in paradise, be sure you are making the most of it. For more information, call Art at Seacoast Cottage Company at 239-462-2679 Happy Grilling!
