No One Can Ever Take Too Many Boat Rides!

Paul McCarthy
Paul McCarthy

"I moved to Captiva in 1986, drawn to the island by her subtropical climate and surrounding waters.  My personal motto is that one can never take too many boat rides. So, with all the nautical amenities here on Captiva,  it's the perfect place to call home."

There are those, who might contend that business and pleasure don't mix.  As the owner of Captiva Cruises and McCarthy's Marina and a happy resident of Captiva Island, I disagree.  Cruising to the out islands of North Captiva, Cayo Costa, Useppa and Cabbage Key remains one of my favorite pastimes.  Always different---always an adventure.  Cabbage Key is quirky and fun, and a great destination for a cold beer, cheeseburger and key lime pie.  Useppa, with its Collier Mansion, historic cottages, botanical walk and charming museum is a magical island.  Leaving the shore, you leave your worries behind.

The water depth in Pine Island Sound averages, but  5',  and always makes for a wonderful day of boating, dolphin sighting, fishing and exploring.  Equally fun is cruising  out on the Gulf of Mexico, along our beautiful beach for an exhilarating afternoon sail or evening sunset.  Shelling enthusiasts are smitten by the pristine, state park island of Cayo Costa.  There are campsites and cabins directly on the beach, where one has nine miles of totally undeveloped beach.  Breathtaking.

Many homes on Captiva's bayside have private docks, where a boat ride is only steps away, but the island also has a number of full-service marinas, where residents and visitors can dock their boats, hire a boat and/or captain, or just take a public cruise.

For those, who love the water, Captiva Island should be your port of call.

Fall Festivals

Food, Music, Dancing, Dress-up, and Plain Ol' Good Fun!

1) TREAT October brings us again to the annual "DING DARLING DAYS" celebration at the J. N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge, October 17th through the 23rd.

'Ding' Darling Days' Family Fun Day
on Sunday, Oct. 17, kicks off a week of eco-activities with all-free refuge tram tours, live wildlife presentations, hot dogs, kids crafts, and more. Birding, boating, and kayaking tours fill the week with environmental activities for all ages. The celebration ends on Saturday, Oct. 23, with Conservation Art Day, where Federal Duck Stamp Winners, a cartoonist, nature artists, and a photography refuge tram tour highlight a day devoted to Jay Norwood Darling's legacy as the first duck stamp artist and Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist. For more information:
GO TO www.dingdarlingdays.com or call 239-472-1100

2) TREAT The 25th annual Baileyfest will be held on Sunday, October 24, 2010 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Bailey's Center on the corner of Periwinkle Way and Tarpon Bay Road.

The stage will feature acts from local performers such as The Schoolhouse Theatre, BIG ARTS Chorus, Sanibel School Steel Drum Band, Kellyn Celtic Arts Irish Dance Academy, and more.

The family-oriented event will include food and beverages, crowning of Baileyfest King and Queen, mule and wagon rides, a bounce house, miniature golf, and traditional games, including an egg and spoon race, cornhole, hula hoop contest, tin can alley and fastest pitch. All proceeds will benefit Sanibel and Captiva non-profit organizations such as CROW, FISH and SCCF.

3)
TRICKS AND TREATS! Risk a hex or curse and plan to join 'Tween Waters Inn
Island Resort for Captiva Island's most notorious Halloween event - "Voodoo Island," held October 30, 2010 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. or until you drop gruesomely dead. Be ready for good times, great music, friendly conversation and - oh yeah - those famous (and infamous) costumes.

The Voodoo Island Party will start out the night rocking the beach with music by an island favorite, the Deb and the Dynamics. This high-energy band covers your favorite songs including a range of Rock, R&B and Jump Blues, and is
known as the ultimate dance-party band. 'Tween Waters Inn also offers a $1,000 costume contest, with judging at midnight, and the promise of a notoriously good time.  The 'Tween Waters Inn annual Halloween bash is traditionally the largest and most famous Halloween party on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, regularly attracting more than 800 colorfully costumed guests. http://www.tween-waters.com

Go Green

Happy HallowGREEN!

Green Halloween
Green Halloween

Halloween can be scary - but it needn't be scary for the planet.  Here's some ideas to think about:

  • Use pillow cases, buckets or cloth bags instead of paper bags for collecting candy.
  • Try shakable, hand-crank and solar flash lights when you're out trick-or-treating.  Kids love them.
  • There's a new trend of giving alternatives to candy (non food items like pencils or healthy treats like fruit).  If that doesn't appeal to the kid in you, consider buying candy that uses the least amount of packaging.
  • After the festivities are over, start a compost pile with your old jack-o-lantern.  We love to roast and eat the seeds, but if you're not a pumpkin seed fan - add them to your compost and you may just have a new crop of pumpkins available in time for a Fall pumpkin pie!
  • Urge children to dispose of their candy wrappers in their bags or in trash cans rather than on the street.
