Fishing, Fun, and
Father's Day on Sanibel and Captiva
Dave Jensen | It's June and Father's Day is just around the corner...Summer
has begun, and the kids are out of school. Here in coastal Lee County, we can't think of a better way
to celebrate than to get on the water! Sanibel and Captiva Islands offer a unique opportunity for the entire
family to enjoy the day. Here are
some examples:
- Rent a boat. Some of the best fishing spots in the world are
right here which include the grass flats of Pine Island Sound for seatrout, the
outer island inlets for a variety of fish including tarpon and mangrove snapper,
and the mangrove areas for the beautiful redfish. Just turning off the engine
and drifting about, enjoying the silence is my favorite thing to do between
fishing times. Make time for lunch
at Cabbage Key or Barnacle Phil's.
-
Hire a Captain. Kick back, leave the driving to someone else. Increase your chances of catching the
big one. June is tarpon time, so
take a chance at experiencing the thrill of catching the jumping silver king.
-
Go to your favorite beach. Everyone can enjoy the beach...the
fisherman, the beachcomber, the sunbather, even the bookworm! Blind Pass area or near the Lighthouse on
Sanibel are my personal choices.
-
Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge offers a special fishing
opportunity either from shore along the main access road, or by renting canoes
via the Tarpon Bay Recreation area. Being this close to nature is something
everyone enjoys including the landlubber.
For more advice on how to make your next fishing trip or day
on the water special, you can visit our website at gocaptiva.com,
call us at 239-472-5800, or just stop by our place on Captiva. After all, we are Jensen's Twin Palm
Marina...home of the BIG FISH STORIES!

Go Green
|
| | Another summer is upon us. School is out and many are planning that uniquely American tradition: The Family Road Trip.
While many things have changed, GPS's replace AAA maps and handheld games have replaced the license plate game, some things never go out of style - like saving money and helping our planet.
Here are some tips to help you do just that...
- Keep tires properly inflated. Under inflated tires can reduce fuel economy by 2%
- Don't idle: Idling consumes 1/2 to 1 gallon of gas per hour Excessive idling causes your engine's components, including cylinders and spark plugs to wear. Children's asthma symptoms increase as a result of car exhaust.
- Drive more slowly. One study reported that for all vehicles tested there was at least a 20% loss in fuel economy as cruising speed increased from 55 to 75 mps. So, 20 mpg at 55 becomes 16 mpg or less at 75.
- Remove extra weight from the car- 100 extra pounds may cost 1 mpg
- Line up green lodging

The Royal Shell Companies Help Make a Wish Come True

TREY'S WISH was to "go to the beach and stay at a beach house, build sand castles, drink from a coconut, climb a palm tree and swim in warm water." With such a great description of his wish (from a five-year-old nevertheless), Royal Shell was more than excited to be able to help him and his family. Trey and his mom, dad and 13-year-old sister recently visited the Islands from his home out west. Trey suffers from a life threatening medical condition and we hoped that a vacation in our little piece of paradise would be just what the doctor ordered.
The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to grant the special wishes of children under the age of 18 living with life-threatening medical conditions. Click on the link to learn more about Make-A-Wish and how you can donate to this worthy organization. www.wish.org
